What are punters to do with Awesome Pluck?
No doubt the Port Macquarie trained three-year-old has talent but it’s harnessing that talent that is proving difficult, and costly to his supporters.
Punters Intel can reveal Awesome Pluck spent all his pennies in the early stages of the TAB Highway (1300m) at Randwick, where he ran 10.92 in successive 200m splits from the 1000m to the 600m.
They were the only sub-11 second sectionals for the entire race so no wonder he was a spent force when the pressure was applied. Add to that he covered the most ground of any runner in the race.
So it’s back to the drawing board for now but if his racing manners can be corrected he’ll be winning plenty of races – until we get proof he’ll always be a risk.
Worth noting out of the Highway was the first-up run by Mister Marmalade, whose 34.79 last 600m was clearly the best figures in the event and the only sub-35 second sectional.
He is a second-up winner in the past and is at his best around a mile.
Matthew Smith has quite a smart filly on his hands in Aqua D’Ivina who, in winning the opening event, ran the fastest last 600m of the day.
Her slick 33.57 was made even better by watching her only get warm in the last 200m. That’s to the eye, her 400m-200m was run in 10.98 with an 11.25 home.
Bearing in mind her event was over 1400m, in the 1000m scamper won by Burradoo he clocked just 33.68.
Lanciato is racing in career best form it would seem and he scorched down the outside from last to win the Tab.com.au Handicap (1400m) in a slick 34.27.
The last 200m of 11.76 was the only final split under 12 in the race.
His performance lined up against the filly Aqua D’Ivina probably amplified just how promising the three-year-old is.
At Wyong on Saturday we had a tearaway leader in the 1600m Class 2 as Lightning Lockie opened up a 23.7m midrace lead before fading to run third.
And the PI data really shows how much he paddled in the last 600m with a 37.65 home including a 13.40 last 200m – and he still ran third.,
The best 600m split out of the Wyong meeting was owned by Godolphin galloper Soothing (33.71) while the lightly raced Ballet Rose, having her second start, ran into second with a 34.17.
Fastest last 600m (Randwick): 33.57 Aqua D’Ivina
Most ground covered (to place): +10.3m Gamblestown.
