Prepared by astute Canberra-based trainer Matthew Dale, Hay Now powered home to claim her fourth victory (along with five seconds) at only her ninth race start.
Hay Now, the $3.70 favourite, finished hard to score by a half-head from Red Knot (Tommy Berry, $5.50) with roughie Bolshoi Devoushka (Jame Innes jnr, $91) a further half-head away in third place in a busy finish with eight horses crossing the line within two lengths of each other.
"It is great to win a race for these owners as they come from Hay, hence the name, and this is their first horse," Dale said afterwards. "She is a very smart mare and we will sit down and reassess where we go from here."
Jockey Nick Heywood was also impressed by the win of the four-year-old: "It was a terrific performance; she just steps up each time." It was Heywood's first Sydney Saturday win.
