Neil Evans' Tips For Newcastle (Friday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 3m:

Race 1 PROVINCIAL MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

We start over the mile, and in a maiden of little or no depth with the hot favourite coming out, improving four-year-old 2. Oakfield Echidna peaks third-up at the distance.

Dangers: Honest filly 8. Without You can run the quinella staying at the distance for her fifth start; while 1. French Delivery heads the rest.

How to play it: Oakfield Echidna to win

Race 2 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (2300m):

The stayers lock horns here, and ultra consistent mare 3. Doroskaya can build further on an impressive CV where she hasn't finished further back than second in her last four. Ran home well in two runs around this level after a dominant Super Maiden win at Kembla before last start way too strong at Gosford from just off the speed. Up in weight for this longer journey, but she's rock hard fit.

Dangers: Must respect three-year-old 7. Revelaide who can improve further after finishing best to claim a weaker graded race here in record time. Meeting a few better ones, but he's on the up, and being by a Derby winner and out of a mare by Desert King, the longer the better. Keep safe 4. Insider Trader who is well into his prep, and drops back from a tougher metro race; while 1. King Kakau who drew low with a claim; and 8. Bonaventure off a CL1 win at this track; can both add value into trifecta and first four plays.

How to play it: Doroskaya to win

Race 3 PAUL PERRY 2YO HCP (1300m):

Now a very tricky two-year-old battle, although emerging Randwick colt 6. Last Command has found a nice race to pounce at just his second start. Liked the way he hit the line on debut in a somewhat blanket finish at Canterbury after being well supported, and getting on to a bigger track over 100m further is a plus.

Dangers: Naturally big watch on Justify colt 4. Just Party from the Ryan-Alexiou stable after a dominant second trial win at Rosehill. Watch the betting on Godolphin colt 1. Broadsiding first run in NSW after a strong closing effort on debut at Ballarat. Include in exotics both 5. Kingdom Underseige off a handy debut run in Listed grade; and 12. Photograph who did her best work late on debut at Canterbury at big odds.

How to play it: Last Command to win

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Expecting well bred 7. The New Sinatra to improve enough from his debut run to break through here. Was solid through the line first time out in a provincial Super Maiden after being well supported in betting, and ridden a touch quieter here on a similar speed map, he will relish the more spacious track and a further 100m.

Dangers: Big watch on 11. Yayoi reloading behind a fair closing metro run on debut for Team Hawkes. Over the odds is 3. Delzino resuming for a second prep behind two progressive trials; while 8. Lady Doris gets blinkers added for her third start, and draws to get a charmed run just behind the speed with cover.

How to play it: The New Sinatra to win

Race 5 3YO & UP MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

A few chances in this one, headed by improving Randwick colt 2. Edited By who is ready to win fourth-up in a change of prep pattern. Hit the line impressively from midfield in two provincial runs a month apart before settling further back in a deeper maiden at Rosehill and running home okay. That came off another four week let-up, but backs up here on a nine day turnaround which is a sure sign he's come on well since then. Drawn to get cover behind the speed, and only needs a clear crack at them from the 350m.

Dangers: The market will be a solid indicator aboard well-bred 4. Dunedin who resumes for only his second start behind two trials. Watch the betting too on the Waterhouse-Bott debutant 3. Just Immortal by Justify who starts off two quieter trials. Another one fresh 7. Heaven Bound is in the each-way argument having won the second of two trials; while 1. New Pharoah resumes off a long break and forward country trial, and is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Edited By to win

Race 6 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1200m):

Very open contest here, and among a few that are over the odds, metro filly 12. Impulsivity looms as an exceptional value bet. Tracked the speed before winning his maiden first-up at Kembla, then finished okay at Wyong in a CL1 on a day where it wasn't easy to make up ground. Meeting a tougher and deeper field here, but draws to get a lovely run in behind the speed, and she's desperate for the extra furlong now.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by 10. Sky Artist who was dominant from just off the speed in a country CL1 affair third-up, and continues to build a tidy record. Big market watch on talented mare 6. Hellcibell returning for a second prep without the blinkers. Was heavily backed on debut last August when she found one better before repaying punters next start with an all-the-way win as a red hot favorite. Bolted in a CL1 on the Beaumont course here next start before spelling, and has been handed a steady trial. Ultra consistent 1. Ljungberg has to lump a big weight after three straight second placings, but he draws to find a handy trail; while at bigger odds 3. Bantarki and 11. Major Murphy both go through wider exotic plays.

How to play it: Impulsivity each way

Race 7 GROUP 3 NEWCASTLE STAKES (1400m):

The feature race at Group 3 level stacks up nicely at good odds for high class five-year-old 2. Unspoken resuming. Stormed through the grades winning four straight last spring, including the Five Diamonds over 1800m. Boasts a 45 percent winning strike rate from 16 starts, and three from five when first-up. Was given a nice searching trial up to 1200m, and sliding across to sit right on the speed, he'll be in this for a long way.

Dangers: Naturally, odds-on favourite 10. Jimmysstar switches states abruptly third-up after going under at Flemington as a long odds-on favourite in a Listed race where he was bewilderingly taken to the front. Had previously bolted in three from three up to BM 84 grade since crossing the Tasman, yet although he draws the fence here and sits on the limit Quality weight of 54kg, is still under the odds against a few of these. Keep safe 1. Zeyrek resuming off a nice trial, and draws to get cover; while 4. Rustic Steel first-up off two progressive trials and a key gear change can add value into exotic returns.

How to play it: Unspoken to win

Race 8 MIDWAY BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1400m):

Lightly raced home tracker 7. Gago resumes off two steady trials in a weakened race. Was put away after winning his maiden at the provincials late last winter, and reportedly has strengthened up big time. Can park just off the speed with cover, and cut loose in the run home.

Dangers: Progressive mare 2. Bindi's Choice is a threat third-up, back from deeper metro grade; while 4. Super can run into the money from the inside draw.

How to play it: Gago to win

BEST BETS:
R4 7. THE NEW SINATRA
R8 7. GAGO

BEST VALUE:
R3 6. LAST COMMAND
