A total of 73 nominations have been weighed for the 154th running of the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) to be staged at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 30th September 2017.
This year’s edition of the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) will be run with a 50.0kg minimum weight and has a total prizemoney purse of $750,000.
Tavago (NZ) has been allotted the topweight in the race with 58.0kg on a 50.0kg limit. He is the winner of the 2016 Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) as well as most recently winning the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) in devastating fashion.
Next in the weights with 57.0kg is Libran (IRE) who has an excellent record over the staying distances. Most recently winning the 2017 Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m), while last preparation winning the 2016 Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) with 58.0kg.
Who Shot Thebarman (NZ) will also be asked to carry 57.0kg this year. He ran a gallant 2nd in the 2017 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) carrying 57.0kg prior to going for a spell.
Last year’s 2nd placegetter Antonio Giuseppe (NZ) has received 54.5kg. He carried the limit in 2016, however this edition is 1.5kg weaker than the 2016 edition.
