Local Trainer Will 'Pay' His Way During Huge Aggie's Day

By Tony Megahey

Accomplished Wagga Wagga trainer Trevor Sutherland is high on confidence with contenders in all six races on home soil at Saturday’s Murrumbidgee Turf Club's TAB meeting.

Crowd wise, the annual Aggie’s Charity Raceday rates second only to the prestigious Wagga Wagga Gold Cup meeting, and the popular Riverina venue offers betting services on the corresponding interstate meetings and in particular, big screen action for Royal Randwick for the multitudes of Winx admirers.

“We’re anticipating a crowd of around 5000, it’ll be a great day and only our Gold Cup day is bigger; we’ve got all our regular services and entertainment, TAB and bookmakers on the locals and interstate for those major Group races," offered MTC's CEO, Scott Sanbrook.

Meanwhile, Sutherland’s big team is firing with a winning double in Pay The Ones and Yawkey Way, both ridden by Alan Chau, at last Saturday’s Griffith meeting with further success for his well-performed galloper Hangin’ with Willie, also ridden by Chau, at last week’s Gundagai TAB raceday.

“Our horses should be around the money again as they're in their right races all day,” Sutherland enthused. “The pick of mine are Lazyaxl and Pay The Ones, and we should be competitive in most of the other races.

"Pay The Ones is thriving so we’ve backed him up from a dominant win, and he’s big and strong enough to handle the weight rise. He’s back a bit in distance but will be strong late again. He ran a big race before that in far tougher grade at Goulburn.”

Pay The Ones carries 60.5kg for Mathew Cahill in the William Farrer Hotel, Aggie’s Cup (1600m), a 1kg rise from his Griffith win.

“Lazyaxl has 62 kilos in the Flying, but he’s the genuine quality in this; been placed at Warwick Farm, won five races including an open at Gundagai in June and he’s also trialled well. In the last, Tearful Kitty has made progress this prep and she went well resuming in a recent jump out.

"In that early maiden Cosmo Star is fitter, in the right company, was placed twice last prep and has progressed. Dream on Stan has ability and can improve on his last start.” At present the track rating is a good four.
