Racing NSW Stewards conducted an inquiry into a report provided by the Racing NSW Betting Department concerning an ‘in running’ lay bet placed on Prince Aurelius which competed in and won Race 5 at Kembla Grange on 16th January 2021. The subject lay bet was placed by the trainer of Prince Aurelius, Tyrone Coyle.
Evidence was provided by licensed trainer Tyrone Coyle, which included documents to support his explanation that he had placed win bets on Prince Aurelius in the days leading up to the event.
Veterinarian records tendered did not reveal any veterinary condition with Prince Aurelius leading up to the race.
Mr Coyle advised Stewards that the motivation for the lay bet was to offset a win bet stake of $200 that he had placed on Prince Aurelius after placing win bets totalling $700 on Prince Aurelius in the days leading up to the relevant race.
Mr Coyle pleaded guilty to a charge under AR237(1) in that as the trainer of Prince Aurelius, he did place a lay bet on Prince Aurelius prior to the gelding winning Race 5 (The Lizzard Conditional B’Mark 68 Hcp, 1600m) at Kembla Grange on 16th January 2021.
After considering the matter of penalty, Mr Coyle was fined $1000.
In assessing an appropriate penalty, Stewards were mindful that Prince Aurelius had won the said race and that Mr Coyle’s overall wagering position on the event was strongly in favour of Prince Aurelius winning the race.
Stewards were also satisfied that there were no integrity concerns surrounding the suitability of Prince Aurelius to participate in the race. Mr Coyle was advised of his rights of appeal.
