Racing NSW Stewards today conducted an inquiry into the analysts’ finding of Furosemide in a blood sample taken from Braven before that horse competed in a barrier trial at Newcastle Racecourse on Tuesday, 22 October 2024.
Evidence was today taken from the trainer of Braven, Ms Angela Davies.
Charge
Ms Davies pleaded guilty to a charge under AR241(a) in that, as the trainer of Braven at all relevant times up to and including Tuesday, 22 October 2024, she did bring that gelding to Newcastle Racecourse on Tuesday, 22 October 2024 for the purpose of participating in a barrier trial when a prohibited substance on Prohibited List B, namely Furosemide, was detected in the blood sample taken from Braven before the barrier trial.
Penalty
The following matters were considered in respect to penalty:
1. Guilty plea & co-operation during the investigation and inquiry
2. Ms Davies’ disciplinary record
3. Principles of specific and general deterrence and what message is sent to the industry in respect to such conduct.
4. Purpose of issuing penalties as a protective measure for the image and interests of the thoroughbred racing industry.
Ms Davies was fined $1250.
Relevant Rules
AR 241 Prohibited substance in sample taken from horse at trial, etc
If a horse is brought to a racecourse or recognised training track to participate in:
(a) an official trial, and a prohibited substance on Prohibited List A and/or Prohibited List B is detected in a sample taken from the horse prior to or following the relevant event, the trainer and any other person who was in charge of the horse at any relevant time breaches this Australian Rule
