Lane Forecasts A Special Oaks Moment From Star Filly

By Ray Hickson

If star filly Treasurethe Moment strikes a dry track at Randwick on Saturday then jockey Damian Lane feels she could produce something special in the Group 1 $1m Asahi Super Dry Australian Oaks (2400m).

It’s already been a highly successful Sydney autumn for Lane with three Group 1s - the Golden Slipper on Marhoona, the Vinery on Treasurethe Moment and the Derby last week on Aeliana.

And to think the Matt Laurie-trained filly could improve on her dominant showing in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on a soft 7 track on April 1 is an ominous sign.

“She was a little inferior on that ground, she didn’t quite quicken as well as she normally would,’’ Lane said on SEN.

“She’s just so honest and adaptable she just gets the job done. Hopefully, looking at the forecast, we’re going to get better ground on Saturday and she goes just as good, that’s all she needs to do, but she may even go a little better.”

Treasurethe Moment, $1.60 with TAB on Wednesday, is in line for eight successive wins in the Oaks and would emulate the feats of Verry Elleegant (2019) and Hungry Heart (2021) as recent Vinery winners to complete the double.

And she’d be the first VRC Oaks victor since Serenade Rose in 2006 to come to Sydney and win the Oaks.

Lane said he likes the inside barrier for the filly, as it suits her racing style, and is confident Laurie has her ready to peak for her autumn goal.

“He’s just managed her so well, to keep turning a horse out to win seven in a row shows what he can do as a trainer and it’s great that she’s been able to showcase that for him,’’ Lane said.

“Hopefully she’s got another dance left in her on Saturday.

“For her low (draw) is great because she’s got a bit of early speed and we can let her begin, and travel early, and then just weigh it up.”

The Yulong colours will stay on Lane following the Oaks as he partners Zarir on the Group 1 $2m Schweppes Sydney (3200m) and it’ll be his first ride on the import who debuted in Australia in the Tancred.

He only managed to beat a couple home in the weight-for-age event but Lane expects him to be better suited under the handicap conditions with the run under his belt.

“He needed that run first-up so hopefully that’s brought him on and again a good draw there so hopefully it can give him his chance,’’ he said.

Caulfield Guineas winner Private Life has been freshened up since his failure in the Futurity in late February and Lane says he’s an interesting runner in the Group 2 $1m Arrowfield Sprint (1200m).

The colt did run fifth in the Champions Sprint back in November against older horses and while he respects the task of toppling the unbeaten Autumn Glow he said it’s not beyond Private Life to give her a scare.

“I’m sure he wouldn’t be there if they didn’t think he could bounce back,’’ Lane said.

“The field outside (Autumn Glow) I thought lacks a bit of depth, at his best he’s certainly going to be very competitive.

Teasurethe Moment wins the Vinery Stud Stakes

“He went back to Sydney after his most recent run and they took a bit of time to get him right again so hopefully he’s back to form on Saturday.”

Lane rides Japanese galloper Geoglyph in the Group 1 $5m Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and said, frankly, he'll need a miracle to turn around his effort in last week's Doncaster Mile but did say that race was over when he blew the start.
