Lady Ioness To Upset Highway Fancies

By Brad Gray

It looks a deep edition of the TAB Highway Handicap (1100m) this weekend but don’t discount the chances of Lady Ioness at the very bottom of the field.

The Street Sense filly put the writing on the wall at the trials before her debut at Tamworth where she won convincingly on a Heavy 10 track. She was tipped out after that, with trainer Todd Howlett keen to test her in stronger company.

“She was pretty impressive that day. She’s a nice filly that goes well. It’s a pretty strong race the Highway this Saturday though,” said Howlett.

So is she worth a ticket at the early TAB fixed odds of $21?

“I do expect her to run well.”

“If she does measure up and hopefully she does, we can look at better races but we’ll take it one step at a time at the moment.”

Howlett will also saddle up Aspiring at Warwick Farm in the Summer Dash, but is realistic about the mare’s chances.

“She is a touch outclassed but it’s so hard to find a 1000m race for her at the moment. I think she struggles beyond 1000m.”

“Her last run, I know was at Narromine, but she broke the track record. She was pretty impressive and is a long way down in the weights too.”

Meanwhile, it might be worth jotting Roy’s Command down in your blackbook. The unraced Commands colt was an early nomination for the Magic Millions and recently won a Wyong trial in good fashion.

“He’s a nice horse. He just felt his shins a little bit after that last trial so we put him in the paddock. He is due to come back in a fortnight. We’ll see where he takes us.”
