Kembla Grange Winners - Tips For Saturday 17th August

Tips by Jack Webster for Saturday's Kembla Grange meeting.

Selections based on a Soft/Heavy track.

Race 1 - 12:30PM CONGRATULATIONS JESS HULL SUPER MDN HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

6. Sunshine Law performed well on debut at Kensington over 1400m but couldn’t capitalise during key moments of the race. He was the runner-up in his last showing at Warwick Farm, showing clear improvement, and has definite prospects here.

Dangers: 3. King of Thunder put in an impressive debut at Newcastle, finishing second behind Trunk, who controlled the race by leading throughout and winning. That was on a similar track, and natural improvement is expected going into this race. It’s a similar race here, and there’s no reason he won’t go close. 1. Eclipson is second up after a respectable three-race debut campaign, where he was the runner-up in a close finish at Warwick Farm in March. He sat second to the leader at Newcastle over 1400m last start, but excuses can be made. Fitter for the run and can return here. Consider. 8. Flying Chevrolet placed in a tough run last start at Warwick Farm. He draws an inside barrier here and can show up.

How to play it: Sunshine Law WIN ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 1:05PM PRICE RACING CHAMPION TRAINER CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

3. Aunty Rene has shown improvement since resuming this preparation, picking up a placing at Newcastle in a sound effort. Her only win was over this distance in similar conditions at Goulburn back in March. She draws an inside barrier here and can perform on a wet track. One to watch.

Dangers: 2. Euromaster has been exceptionally consistent, with four placings and wins in his seven starts. He put in a commanding effort to win his maiden at Wyong on a wet track before a handy run over 1400m in a Benchmark 64. He handles a wet track well and is back in grade here. Should pick up a nice position from the wide barrier and go close. 1. Cosmic Lad won second up over this distance at Newcastle but has struggled since being challenged at greater distances. He wasn’t at his best in his last showing at Newcastle over 1200m, but the move back to 1500m and the good draw are positive factors here. He is fitter and can improve second up. 5. Lady Devine hasn’t done much wrong since resuming this campaign, with three solid placings, and will look to roll forward here. She draws the inside barrier in a race that suits her.

How to play it: Aunty Rene WIN ($3.70 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 - 1:40PM ZAC LLOYD CHAMPION APPRENTICE MIDWAY MDN PLATE (1000 METRES)

8. Miss Judas had two starts last spring, including a second place at Randwick on debut, followed by a difficult race at Rosehill. She’s had 9 months between race starts but has been trialling well in the lead-up to this campaign, boasting a second at Randwick in July and a third at Rosehill earlier this month. She can give a good account of herself when resuming here.

6. Solar Surfer is on debut and looks ready to strike following some impressive trials leading up to this race, including a commanding win at Wyong over this distance in his last run. 3. Thaibeefsalade is race fit with a one-week turnaround, building from a strong effort over 1200m. The drop back to 1000m will suit her and she can make an impact. 1. Just Un Clou faced a tough task after missing the jump early. She made good ground and ran into a strong position despite the challenge. She shouldn’t be left out.

How to play it: Miss Judas WIN ($1.80 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 - 2:15PM KEAGAN LATHAM CHAMPION JOCKEY BM 64 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

5. River Frost was impressive at Moruya when resuming this campaign, winning convincingly while carrying 62kg from a wide barrier, thanks to a strong late surge. He found himself in a tough spot last start, being boxed in at a critical moment. Racing at his preferred distance and drawing the rail here are positive factors for him. One to watch.

Dangers: 3. Free State won first up at Newcastle over 900m with an impressive late burst from well back in the field. Fitter second up, he draws an inside barrier here and has done his best work on wet tracks previously. He could show up. 1. Epic Proportions saw great success in his initial campaign, winning on debut at Canterbury and finishing runner-up at Randwick and Moonee Valley in subsequent races. His form has been inconsistent since, but he has been trialling well in preparation for this campaign. Fresh, he will look to return to his previous form. 2. Fire Star hasn’t done much wrong, placing in three and winning one of his six races. He has won first up previously and suits the drop to 1000m. He will be a threat in this race.

How to play it: River Frost WIN ($15.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 5 - 2:50PM PRICE RACING CHAMPION LOCAL TRAINER BM 68 (1600 METRES)

2. Tartana comes off a win at the Sapphire Coast in her last outing and previously won here over 1400m three runs back. She races at her home base and has delivered solid performances here in the past.

Dangers: 1. Spitfire had a dominant win three runs back at Albury over this distance and has performed well in two city runs since, including a trying effort at Warwick Farm over the same distance. He is race fit and benefits from a 3kg claim and an inside barrier here. He has every chance. 3. La Belle Claire appeared to make her run too early in her last start at Canterbury, leading and fading in the closing stages. She had a commanding win here in her previous run, and race tactics are likely to be adjusted for this one. 4. Cool Lad has been finishing strongly and prefers to run on pace. He gets a 2kg claim to assist today. It will be his first run at 1600m, and he could show up.

How to play it: Tartana WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 6 - 3:30PM MARKEY SADDLERY PROVINCIAL BM 64 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

9. Ace’s In Bloom resumed with a win at Newcastle last start on a soft track, finishing strongly after trailing well from the turn and overcoming pressure. She has one win and one second placing in her first three races, with both of those performances at this distance on soft tracks. She shows obvious promise and looks set to continue her form here.

Dangers: 1. Headstock has a chance at redemption after falling short here last start. He faced a tough challenge, having to overcome the outside barrier and being positioned widest from the turn. He won here in his previous race over the same distance, and with a better draw this time, he looks to be a threat. 10. Nightcapped resumed at Newcastle and placed over this distance. He is race fit, can handle a wet track, and looks set to improve here. Has every chance. 4. Titan Star has made an impressive return after a four-week freshen-up in June, with three placings and a win in her four runs since. She draws an inside barrier here and is in the mix.

How to play it: Ace’s In Bloom WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 7 - 4:05PM NEIL TIMMINS 70TH BIRTHDAY MDN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

14. Cotswolds is a Godolphin filly who ran well on debut at Wyong but couldn’t capitalise in the final moments. She is fitter and better for the run and looks set to improve here.

Dangers: 7. Dance To The Boom has trialled well in the lead-up, running second at Rosehill over 900m in July and third at Hawkesbury over 1000m earlier this month. From the Bjorn Baker stable, she looks set to run well on debut. 1. Invade And Conquer has placed in 6 of his 9 starts and races on his home track here. He was the betting favourite last start but finished midfield at Hawkesbury, where he faced a tough task from a wide position. He has another chance here. 4. Emilia Jane was runner-up on debut in New Zealand at Te Rapa. She had a respectable trial over 1000m at Hawkesbury and can offer a decent showing here.

How to play it: Cotwolds WIN ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 8 - 4:40PM HEADSTOCK HORSE OF THE YEAR MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

1. Hooligan Tommy raced well when runner-up here last start, falling just short after a late burst. He wasn’t suited to the longer distances in prior races but previously placed at 1800m at Hawkesbury. The drop to 1400m suits him, and he should give a good account of himself second up.

Dangers: 8. Forest Gump delivered an impressive performance on debut at Wyong in a similar race, leading and controlling throughout before being beaten in a photo finish in the last stride. He is fitter and better for that run and is likely to take the lead early again. He looks set to strike this time. 2. Magic Shadow was just behind the placings at Newcastle in his last outing, in a similar race. He has been showing natural improvement and should be among the finishers here. 9. Komodo Dragon was heavily backed on debut at Wyong and finished with a placing in a narrow finish after a sound effort. He should go close again.

How to play it: Hooligan Tommy WIN ($9.00 TAB Fixed Odds).
