Kavanagh Hoping Sukida Can Stamp Promise At Wyong (Sunday)

By Ray Hickson

Trainer Sam Kavanagh is going to lay the platform for promising mare Sukida to be a Provincial-Midway Championships prospect if she can build on her impressive debut when she runs at Wyong on Sunday.

The four-year-old is the product of an inexpensive mare called Tizzy May who was purchased by Kavanagh’s partner Kelly Fawcett for just $500 a few years back and the decision to send her to Supido hoping they’d struck a suitable match.

On the evidence of her Newcastle win last month that mating has produced a horse with some ability.

“She had a bad breeding record and Kelly identified Supido after we got some breeding advice from a pedigree expert,’’ Kavanagh said.

“His service fee back then was about $5000, that was before Buenos Noches and others came along.

“She’s been a slow process, she’s four now but she’s grown into a really lovely horse. She’s a half to a stakes performer and from a really good family.

“She’s definitely shown a really good turn of foot and you’d like to think on her pedigree she will get 1200m no problem and maybe even 1400m.”

Kavanagh dual accepted at Wyong with Sukida for her second race start and leant toward the Sublime Aluminium & Glass Somersby Handicap (1100m), which is restricted to Midway horses, as opposed to a Class 1.

Her debut was over 900m and Kavanagh said the way the day was panning out as far as pattern of racing goes there was plenty of merit in her performance to charge over the top and win running away.

“Kelly wanted her ridden quietly because she wanted her to relax and finish,’’ he said.

“It was an on speed day so that was where we were a little bit nervous. She sat back and gave them probably five lengths at one stage and rounded them up, and went from looking like is she going to get there to winning by a length and a half.”

It’s a different scenario for Sukida, $4.00 with TAB on Saturday, around Wyong but Kavanagh says jockey Tyler Schiller will have the option to settle not too far away.

“I’m just hoping she can go there and put herself not far from the speed and hopefully do the same again,’’ he said.

“She led and won her trial impressively over 800m (at Wyong) and she does have the speed to put herself in a race.

“I’m hoping she gets a nice run behind them and gets the last crack.”

Sukida wins at Newcastle on July 13

With a $1 million Provincial-Midway Championships Final on offer in the autumn, Kavanagh said it’s likely he’ll give Sukida a break, particularly if she wins, and then give her the chance to progress to the city in the new year.

“We’ll make sure she is in work at the right time of year and if she continues to go through the grades and improve she’s around for those races,’’ he said.
