Juveniles To Sparkle In Silver At Rosehill Gardens (Saturday)

The road to the 2017 Longines Golden Slipper will continue this Saturday, 18 February with TAB Silver Slipper Stakes Day at Rosehill Gardens.

The highly anticipated Group 2 $250,000 TAB Silver Slipper Stakes will set the stage for the Longines Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two-year- olds, with the winner securing ballot exemption for the $3.5million sprint at Rosehill Gardens on 18 March.

This year’s renewal of the TAB Silver Slipper has She Will Reign for Gary Portelli as the short priced $1.70 TAB Fixed Odds favourite.

The Manhattan Rain filly powered home in each of her two career starts, winning by big margins on both occasions.

In preparation for this run, She Will Reign also completed a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on 6 February where she ran on strongly for a nine-length win.

Similarly, Veranillo ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds) for John O’Shea has also had two runs for two wins in his short career. Proven over the distance, the smart Medaglia D’Oro colt has also been successfully tried in race conditions on the Rosehill Gardens surface.

Khan ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds) from Snowden Racing will return to the track following a three month spell. The chestnut ran well to the line in his maiden start on 1 October 2016 and has had two barrier trials in the lead up to this test.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing Services & Membership, James Heddo, acknowledged the significance of Saturday’s feature events.

“There is only four weeks until the running of the Longines Golden Slipper, and it is widely recognised that the TAB Silver Slipper plays a major role in shaping the final field for the two-year-old feature,’’ said Mr Heddo.

“In recent years Mossfun and Pierro have both taken out the TAB Silver Slipper prior proving successful in Rosehill Gardens’ showpiece event.”

Chris Waller will be looking for back-to-back wins in the other racing feature on the card, the Group 2 $400,000 Schweppes Hobartville Stakes following Press Statement’s success in 2016.

In 2017, Waller has entered Comin’ Through who opened as the $4.20 TAB Fixed Odds favourite. The three-year-old showed form in his spring campaign with two wins and a place from thee starts before leaving for a spell. An honest effort was also shown in his first up run back at Royal Randwick on 4 February and he will strip fitter here.

Stablemate Veladero ($7.00 TAB Fixed Odds) has also been entered for the 1400m contest and will be strong competition second up this preparation.

Another runner of note is the James Cummings-trained colt Prized Icon ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds), who will resume from a spell after scoring a convincing 2.5 length win in the Victorian Derby last October, his second Group 1 success.

Adult general admission tickets are available for $15.00 at ticketek.com.au.

Public gates will open at 11.30am with the first race at 12.45pm.

Rosehill Gardens has free high-capacity WiFi across the racecourse precinct.

There is free public parking off James Ruse Drive as well as free parking in the infield from the Unwin Road entrance.
