John Schell's Tips For Newcastle (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:05PM DABS PLUMBING PROVINCIAL MAIDEN HANDICAP (900 METRES)

7. Cutepi had two starts earlier in the year and showed improvement in the second of them when finishing fourth at Gunnedah. She resumes from a spell here and has looked good winning two recent trials. She’s drawn well and gets her chance to break through.

Dangers: 2. Bent As Hell resumed with a second placing at Quirindi to make it three straight placings. She shows talent and should be in the thick of things again. 10. Lightly Sparkled has finished fourth in each of her two starts and looks to have the potential to give this a shake. 9. Ivy’s Way is resuming from a spell and has performed well in a trial leading into this.

How to play it: Cutepi WIN.

Race 2 - 1:40PM CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

6. Sanctuary Storm had two trials leading into his debut effort at Bathurst. He hit the line well to win that event and the extra distance here can only enhance his claims. He should be able to go on with the job.

Dangers: 1. Unowho has shown some talent in his career with a win and a couple of placings to his name. He was midfield at Hawkesbury before being spelled and has had two trials leading into this resuming run. 2. Chilly Charlie has had three runs back from a spell and hasn’t been beaten too far in the latest two of them. He can make an impact here. 4. Luskaire was midfield at Kembla Grange when resuming from a spell and has the talent to figure in the minor money.

How to play it: Sanctuary Storm WIN.

Race 3 - 2:15PM O'NEILL'S TYRES JIM O'NEILL MEMORIAL MAIDEN (1500 METRES)

17. Existential Bob was having his third start in a race when hitting the line well late to finish a last start third at Kembla Grange. He sticks at the same distance in this and only needs to run up to that effort to be hard to hold out.

Dangers: 1. Kotaishi ran well in his first two starts back from a spell when fourth in each of them and then he was just edged out when finishing second at Canterbury last tome out. He only needs to run up to those efforts to be hard to hold out in this. 16. Pierro’s Girl failed to beat a runner home on debut at Kembla Grange but is capable of a sharp improvement here. 19. Lulo Link disappointed at Hawkesbury last time out but her previous form was sound.

How to play it: Existential Bob EACH WAY.

Race 4 - 2:50PM O'NEILL'S TYRES MAITLAND & RUTHERFORD SUPER MAIDEN (1300M)

11. Hyperbolic had two starts midway through the year for a debut second at Hawkesbury before a fourth at Randwick. She since had two trials before resuming with a midfield effort at Canterbury and will find this an easier task. Expect her to figure prominently.

Dangers: 8. Simply Just is a gelding on debut and has had a solid grounding with four trials spread over a couple of preparations. He ran second in the latest of them at Rosehill and should run boldly in this. 7. Pratt is also on debut and has had five trials in total. He’s well-bred and should be primed to run well here. 12. Mignonette has had two trials leading into this debut and looks to have the talent to be able to run into the money.

How to play it: Hyperbolic WIN.

Race 5 - 3:30PM ULTRA TUNE JESMOND SUPER MAIDEN PLATE (1300 METRES)

10. Burj is a filly making her debut here for Peter Snowden and she’s had three trials leading into this debut, with a second and a first in the most recent two. She’s drawn ideally here and gets her chance to start her career with a win.

Dangers: 7. Rockbarton Flash made his debut at Scone and battled on well to finish second in that event. His trials had been good before that and he should be in the finish of this event again. 11. Endure is a filly on debut and has been fitted for this with a number of trials. A forward showing is expected. 13. Synergize had a couple of runs earlier in the year without being placed but has had two trials leading into this return and should be primed to run well.

How to play it: Burj WIN.

Race 6 - 4:05PM LIQUIP NEWCASTLE 4YO&UP BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

14. Coella is lightly raced with a good record with two wins and three seconds from just the five starts. She’s won her latest two starts at Quirindi and Muswellbrook and she can win again.

Dangers: 2. Awesome Tycoon has been racing well with a win at Quirindi two starts ago being followed by a last start close-up second at Scone as favourite. He can give this a shake again. 3. Crop Duster hit the line well to win at Newcastle two starts ago before a solid fifth at Rosehill last time out. 5. Zouprince hasn’t been far away in two runs back from a spell and can give plenty of cheek.

How to play it: Coella EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 4:45PM PRO-TORQUE MINION CUP MIDWAY BM64 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

2. Miss Cartel was in good form last campaign having won three on end at Scone, Taree and Muswellbrook when racing on the speed and fighting on too well to score. She was spelled after failing to fire at Wyong and has since had a trial at Warwick Farm leading into this resuming run.

Dangers: 1. Oakfield Badger was big odds when hitting the line well to score a last start Scone win. She should run well again here with a repeat of that performance. 3. Lounerse was a Port Macquarie winner two starts ago before not being beaten far when midfield behind Oakfield Badger last time out. 7. Hellaine won at Kembla Grange three starts ago and is not the worst in this line-up.

How to play it: Miss Cartel WIN.

Race 8 - 5:25PM PRO-TORQUE CESSNOCK CUP - CONDITIONAL BM68 (1850 METRES)

1. Bestower has shown staying ability in her career and comes into this on the back of three runs back from a spell. She hit the line well for a last start second at Rosehill and that form is sound.

Dangers: 4. Subarctic won a couple on end at Moe and Echuca either side of a spell and comes into this after a last start second at Bendigo. The step up in distance here suits and he looms as a danger. 7. Outcast Girl has struck winning form having scored at Nowra and Scone at her latest two starts. She can figure again. 6. Overice finished second to Outcast Girl last time out and could sneak into the placings again.

How to play it: Bestower WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 4 (11) Hyperbolic.
Race 8 (1) Bestower.

Best Value:
Race 3 (17) Existential Bob.
