John Schell's Tips For Canterbury (Friday Night)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 6:00PM DRINKWISE PLATE (1900 METRES)

7. Great White Shark was placed at Rosehill two starts ago then ran at this track two weeks ago and looked home only to be run down late by Amusing. He steps up in distance for this and gets his chance to break through.

Dangers: 3. Sounds Unusual was on debut at Newcastle and hit the line well when clear to run second. He looks talented and is not out of this. 8. Tempestry debuted with a fourth at Newcastle and while he was a fair way from the winner, he did enough to suggest he can be a factor up to this trip. 9. Lady Justice was placed at Kembla Grange when resuming from a spell and then ran well again when fourth at Wyong last time out. She should run well again.

How to play it: Great White Shark WIN.

Race 2 - 6:30PM BUY AN ARROWFIELD YEARLING HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

2. Goodlucktome was placed on debut at Kembla Grange before following a sixth at Rosehill with a fourth at Doomben and then being spelled. He’s had a trial at Hawkesbury to prepare for this and a forward showing is on the cards while he’s fresh.

Dangers: 3. Hell To Pay hit the line well enough to finish third at this track two weeks ago when resuming and he can play a part in the finish again with a repeat of that. 1. Maori Chief resumes from a spell here and was placed in each of his three starts earlier in the year when favourite in each of them. Expect him to sprint well fresh. 8. Tuileries was favourite when running sixth at Warwick Farm in April and she resumes here on the back of a recent trial win.

How to play it: Goodlucktome EACH WAY.

Race 3 - 7:00PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Vanessi was a heavily backed favourite here two weeks ago and led and fought on well to finish second behind stablemate Inside Man. She’s drawn well here and should take plenty of beating again.

Dangers: 2. Blanc De Noir debuted at Hawkesbury in a Super Maiden and she battled on well to finish a close-up third. She should be better for that experience and give a good sight again. 7. Miss Jones is on debut but has been fitted for this with some good trial performances. 9. Regimental Colours disappointed here last time out but is capable of improvement.

How to play it: Vanessi WIN.

Race 4 - 7:30PM THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

3. Guzumped hit the line well when finishing fifth at Rosehill over a shorter trip and then was back to his best when scoring a strong win at Wyong over a mile last time out. He’s suited by the step up in trip here and he can play a part in the finish again.

Dangers: 5. Like A Tiger ran well enough when a last start fourth at this track and he races as though this distance will suit him. 12. Like Lukey has hit her straps of late having impressed when winning at Scone and Muswellbrook. She should run well again in this. 9. Heaven Bound disappointed here two weeks ago but she is talented on her day and is worth another chance.

How to play it: Guzumped EACH WAY.

Race 5 - 8:00PM TAB HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

10. Gerringong couldn’t have been more impressive when debuting with a win at this track two weeks ago. She should push forward from a tricky alley here and keep her winning record intact.

Dangers: 8. Husk has a win and three placings to her name from just the five starts and she resumes here having performed well in a recent trial. She should be primed to run well. 5. Impulsivity was placed at Hawkesbury when resuming from a spell and another placing wouldn’t surprise. 4. Khaznah was a winner at this track last campaign and resumes here on the back of two recent trials.

How to play it: Gerringong WIN.

Race 6 - 8:30PM CAPTIVANT @ KIA ORA HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

10. Apex impressed when powering home to score at Hawkesbury when resuming then fought on to the line well again when finishing second at this track two weeks ago. He’s drawn wide here but can figure prominently if the breaks go his way.

Dangers: 8. Zealously has looked good winning two from two this campaign at Kembla Grange and Wyong when racing on the speed. He should push forward again here and take plenty of running down. 6. Jambalaya ran third as favourite here when resuming then was down the track at Warwick Farm when last produced. He can lift on that here. 5. Vegas Raider is resuming from a spell and is handy at best. He can sprint well fresh.

How to play it: Apex WIN.

Race 7 - 9:00PM JOHN MCGRATH KIA EVENING STAR (1550 METRES)

2. Inquiring Minds was first-up from a spell at this track last month and while he only arrived in the nick of time to score there was plenty of merit in the win and he can go on with the job in this over the same distance.

Dangers: 1. Fortune is resuming from a spell and while he’ll be better over longer he is a first-up winner and he can sprint well fresh here and having two solid trials in preparation. 4. Unlimited had everything go his way to score at this track back in September and he’s since had a trial to be kept up to the mark for this. He can figure in the money without surprising. 5. Bat Out Of Hell finished third to Inquiring Minds here last time out and should give plenty of cheek on the speed from gate one.

How to play it: Inquiring Minds WIN.

Race 8 - 9:30PM RANVET HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

8. How Dare You was resuming from a spell at this track last month and she ran home well to finish fourth behind Captain Amelia. She’s drawn better in this event and should be in the thick of things if anywhere near her best.

Dangers: 3. Scorch has a handy record with three wins and as many placings from 10 starts. He resumed from a spell with a win at this track and that was on the back of two solid trials. Zac Wadick’s apprentice allowance should assist his claims in this. 10. Winston Hills finished second in each of his first three starts then resumed from a long spell to score at Kembla Grange in January. He resumes again here and has won two recent trials in preparation. 11. True Amor won well at Kembla Grange when first-up from a spell and then disappointed here last time out. He can improve on that.

How to play it: How Dare You WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 6 (10) Apex.
Race 8 (8) How Dare You.

Best Value:
Race 2 (2) Goodlucktome.
