John Schell's Tips For Canterbury (Friday)

By John Schell

(Selections based on a soft track)

Race 1 - 6:00PM JAMES SQUIRE HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

6. Red Envelope led the field up on debut at Warwick Farm before finishing sixth and then being spelled. She resumes here having had two recent trials and should be primed to give a good account of herself.

Dangers: 7. Anarita was resuming from a spell when third at Hawkesbury and she should have derived benefit from that effort. 5. Heesen is having her first start and has looked good in her trials leading into this. 4. Endure hit the line well for a second at Newcastle on debut and can figure again here despite drawing awkwardly.

How to play it: Red Envelope WIN ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 2 - 6:30PM DRINKWISE PLATE (1100 METRES)

7. Madam Instrife was placed at this track on debut earlier in the year and was then given a break after a second at Newcastle in August. She resumed with a solid second at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago and this looks a perfect race for her to break her maiden.

Dangers: 1. Viaconi has shown ability with three placings from six starts and he should figure in the money again here. 3. Everybody Rise is resuming on the back of two good trials and he’s been placed in three of five starts. 9. Wild Annie is on debut after two trials and could run a bold race.

How to play it: Madam Instrife WIN ($1.60 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 3 - 7:00PM SCHWEPPES PLATE (1550 METRES)

4. California Blues has been racing well with placings in each of his latest three starts. He did his best work late when second at Hawkesbury last time out and he sticks at a similar distance range in this.

Dangers: 5. Iconify was on debut when running a solid fourth at Hawkesbury and he should be better for that experience. 6. Cantarito exceeded expectations on debut when second at Kembla Grange and then ran well enough in a leader dominated race on the Kensington track at her only other start. 9. She Rex battled on well to finish third here last month and can figure despite the wide alley.

How to play it: California Blues WIN ($6.00 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 4 - 7:30PM THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

3. Autumnmation won a couple on end at Doomben and then this track midway through the year and then was placed on the Kensington track and at Rosehill before being spelled. She had two trials before resuming with a down the track effort at Rosehill but looks suited by the extra distance here and has the advantage of barrier one.

Dangers: 9. Perfumist loomed to win at Goulburn two starts ago only to be edged out but then atoned with a last start easy Mudgee win. This is harder but she’s on the up. 2. Frankly Elegant ran well when resuming with a second to Pier Pressure at this track and that form looks strong. 1. Pioneer Lass has been placed in both of her runs since resuming from a spell and has claims again.

How to play it: Autumnmation WIN ($4.80 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 5 - 8:00PM RANVET HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

2. Bat Out Of Hell went to the front at this track last week and was strong to the line when scoring a good win. He’s a consistent type that should take plenty of running down again despite the rise in weight.

Dangers: 3. Captain Maverick strips fitter for his latest effort on the Kensington track when he was returning from a let-up. 4. Fiddlers Green resumed with a dominant Hawkesbury win before failing on a heavy track at Rosehill. Expect improvement on a drier surface here. 1. Monarchs Brae is resuming from a spell and can sprint well fresh.

How to play it: Bat Out Of Hell WIN ($1.90 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 6 - 8:30PM HYLAND RACE COLOURS HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

1. Apex came from back in the field and did the job well to score a good win as favourite at Hawkesbury when resuming from a spell and he backed that up with a solid last start second at this track. He’s drawn well here and gets his chance to win again.

Dangers: 2. Manuscript was a good winner at Wyong when resuming then failed in tougher grade at Rosehill. He can bounce back. 8. Dance To The Boom won at Kembla Grange on debut in August and resumes here. 6. Canpikapony was a Newcastle winner before being spelled and she resumes here. She looks to have the talent to make an impact.

How to play it: Apex WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 7 - 9:00PM PETER WARREN KIA EVENING STAR (1200 METRES)

8. Demiana was narrowly beaten here when second two starts ago then took on Saturday grade and ran well enough when fourth at Rosehill on a heavy track. The inside gate here is in her favour.

Dangers: 6. Shines improved when placed here last time out and should figure prominently again. 2. Shalailed should improve here back to a drier surface, while 3. Super Bright resumes and is a first-up winner.

How to play it: Demiana WIN ($4.60 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 8 - 9:30PM TAB HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

3. Like A Tiger was third-up from a spell when fourth here at the end of last month. He’s up in distance for this and ready to show his best.

Dangers: 6. Galano battled to the line well at Rosehill last time out when a close-up fifth. 7. Heaven Bound is talented and ran well when third here last week. 8. Angel Of Light has been thereabouts of late and can be placed.

How to play it: Like A Tiger EACH WAY ($9.50 TAB Fixed Odds)

Best Bets:

Race 6 - (1) Apex.
Race 7 - (8) Demiana.

Best Value:

Race 8 - (3) Like A Tiger.
