Jockey Quotes - The Shorts

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $1 million Bowermans Shorts (1100m) at Royal Randwick.

James McDonald (Nature Strip): “I thought I won't move a muscle and see what actually unfolds. There’s no real pressure on us to hold a position. I just let him glide through and he did it beautifully.

“First half was great and at the 500 (metre mark) where he normally chimes into his races, he thought time was ‘go’, but as soon as I came back a little bit, oh boy, he came back and then it was just a matter of gliding up the running.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve. I think there is a little more to give but in saying that he was at his top.

“He’s the pick of the yard because he wanders around. He did that at Ascot as well. Everyone was in awe of him the way he strutted around the parade ring and I think that was his best performance in his career and I dare to say that he hasn’t gone backwards.”

Nature Strip wins the Shorts

Rachel King (Overpass): “Huge first up run. He has a bit of improvement to come. 1200m around here will be perfect for him.”

Hugh Bowman (Lost And Running): “Outstanding.”

Brenton Avdulla (Eduardo): “We got control. Thought he was the one to beat at the top of the straight. He gave a good little kick. Would have liked him to duel a bit more with Nature Strip but whether he had the edge off him second up off that testing run the other day. He’s on target to run well in The Everest.”

William Pike (Masked Crusader): “A nice return.”

Sam Clipperton (Mazu): “Couldn’t have been happier with him. He acquitted himself very well against an Everest type field. He really has good improvement to come. I think that will give him a bit of a nudge as to what is required. He’ll take it to the next level.”

Robbie Dolan (Shelby Sixtysix): “He tried hard. He is just going to need a few more runs to be competitive in that sort of grade.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Classique Legend): “The ground just went against him. He will come on from the run, hopefully he pulls up fine so he can push on.” (Since pulled up lame and will be spelled).

Tommy Berry (Athelric): “Had a lovely run. Thought I was going to go with them at the top of the straight but a few of them turned the V8s on and I was very proud of his efforts.”

Jason Collett (Andermatt): “Wide and keen. Didn’t finish it off.”

Tyler Schiller (Handle The Truth): “He was very good. That was his most unpreferred ground. I thought he stuck on well.”

Tim Clark (Rocketing By): “Solid run. He can win back in grade.”

Tom Sherry (Anethole): “As good as I felt him. He deserves a spot in the Kosciuszko.”
