It looked his race to lose on paper and that proved to be the case for Avilius in the G1 Kia Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens.
This is what the jockeys said after the $1.5m staying feature.
James McDonald (Avilius): “I shouldn’t get paid for that one I don’t reckon. I know what all the fuss is about with him now. What a super horse, push-button. He’s a credit to the team, they’ve kept backing him up and they can see he’s backing up really well.”
“He’s a super horse, got a great turn of foot, loves the ground. He’s a pleasure to ride.”
Avilius was a cut above once again
Kerrin McEvoy (Red Cardinal): “I ended up riding a little bit closer because of the way the race unfolded. It didn’t suit. He wasn’t able to get home in that ground after being pushed a little bit wide around the corner.”
Damian Lane (Sound): “He went great. He really loved the ground. He was held up at a vital stage and I couldn’t get into the race but he finished off really strong.”
Corey Brown (Patrick Erin): “I was a little disappointed. I followed the favourite, the eventual winner. I thought he could have attacked the line a bit better.”
Brenton Avdulla (Big Duke): “He ran awesome. I had the back of the winner from the half mile and he was too good for me.”
Jamie Kah (Ventura Storm): “He needed a lot more clear running. He probably runs fifth or sixth with that.”
Craig Williams (Yogi): “I was delighted with his performance. When they quickened up from the 700m, my horse was unable to go in the ground. He was pretty hopeless in the ground. Once he got to firmer footing when we found better going in the straight he really motored home. Looking forward to two weeks time in the Sydney Cup back to handicap conditions.”
Tommy Berry (Brimham Rocks): “I think he might need a bit of headgear, a set of blinkers on to sharpen him up. He’s pretty happy just going through the motions at the moment.”
Jason Collett (Ace High): “We ended up in front. He seemed comfortable but there was nothing left for the finish.”
Sam Clipperton (Rondinella): “Really good run. I had a nice, soft run for the first three quarters of the race. I popped out a little bit earlier to avoid getting boxed in. She stuck on well. In the spring, if she finds a dry track she will be a force to be reckoned with.”
Blake Shinn (Nettoyer): “She ran okay. She was probably ridden a bit against her pattern. She didn’t finish off so we go back to how she is ridden best and hopefully get a better result.”
Mark Zahra (Doukhan): “He ran well, it was a good Sydney Cup trial.”
