Jockey Quotes - Randwick Guineas

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $1,000,000 The Agency Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Kerrin McEvoy (Celestial Legend): “He was great. It’s a dream for Les (Bridge) and for (owner) Bon (Ho). Les has really loved this horse for a while. It’s been well documented and he did a great job, the horse.

“It worked out fine early but then the pressure went on and then I lost my cover and I thought OK, I’ll just try to slide forward and be in front of J Mac (James McDonald) and then he muscled me out of the way on the corner and I had to just regroup and balance him. He was tough the last furlong because I had to ask him for that extreme effort and he put his head out and dug deep. It was a lovely win, first time up to the mile.

“It’s bloody enjoyable. My young fella Charlie is in there valeting for me and he gave me a pep talk before the race, he said: ‘C’mon Dad, it’s about time for a Group One’. It’s nice to have him here and be involved and it’s great to get another big race. I’ve been fortunate to win some nice ones. It’s been a little bit of a drought since my last one, so it’s nice to get it done here for Les.”

James McDonald (Militarize): “He ran phenomenally well. He gave his all. Just a messy run race, probably stop start, didn’t really suit him. He is a sharp colt, very talented. He’s knocking on the door. Just unfortunate we didn’t get the bob today.”

Tom Marquand (Cafe Millenium): “He has run huge. Obviously I had a spin around on him last year. He has done well physically. For a moment I thought he was going to go over the top.”

Nash Rawiller (Tom Kitten): “He was awesome today. He didn’t really get many breaks go his way from between the 300m and the 200m. But he hit the line terrifically.”

Jason Collett (Encap): “Pretty stiff. Followed the winner and placegetter but had no room down the straight.”

Tim Clark (Ganbare): “Good honest performance from him. He will appreciate when he gets out to 2000m and then the 2400m.”

Adam Hyeronimus (Les Vampires): “He has gone great. We were at our top from the start and struggled to take up the lead. Considering what happened mid-race and the way he finished off, a good run.”

Tommy Berry (Fukubana): “Too keen.”

Tyler Schiller (Ducasse): “Wasn’t really the plan with him. He got over-racing with the blinkers on instead of the visors. He ended up slotting into a good spot. He was very game in the straight when they challenged him.I just felt like if they didn’t want to ride him quiet he’d happily roll forward and control a race.”

Sam Clipperton (Ceolwulf): “I thought he ran terrific. Right on track for a horse aiming up at 2000m plus.”

Chad Schofield (Cosmic Lad): “I thought it was a very good run. He got thrown in the deep end today but I thought he handled himself well. Will appreciate further.”
