Jockey Quotes - Australian Derby

Angel of Truth led from start to finish in taking out the $2m G1 Harrolds Australian Derby (2400m) for Gwenda Markwell and Corey Brown. It's the third year in a row the Tulloch Stakes has provided the winner of this feature.

This is what the beaten jockeys had to say after it's running.

Corey Brown (Angel Of Truth): "Once he got to the front, he did what he liked. 600m from home he was travelling and once he gets to his top he sustains it."

“He gave some cheek and I looked over my shoulder after getting the front. Full credit Gwenda and the team for the win.”

Angel of Truth was too strong from the front

Tommy Berry (Madison County): “Massive run, he stayed the trip out well. The leader just got away with murder again so it was always going to be hard to catch.”

Opie Bosson (In A Twinkling): “He relaxed well once he got outside the leader and he stuck on okay.”

Craig Williams (Arrogant): “It was a shame he didn’t bring the same form reference that he did last time, he was a bit more dour today and didn’t handle the track conditions.”

Damien Oliver (Chapada): “Just didn’t handle the heavy track.”

Damian Lane (Surely Sacred): “He was super, travelled into it like the winner, probably didn’t see out the 2400m on the heavy ground.”

Jonathan Riddell (Platinum Invador): “The ground is just stopping him and he may have had enough.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Global Exchange): “Nice trip, he travelled well, hit a rough patch at the half-mile, had to get his confidence back and he struggled around the corner. He stayed on well, but I think better ground is his go. Nice staying horse.”

Hugh Bowman (Stars Of Carrum): “Pace worked against us, if I had my time again I would have just rolled around and led, but I wasn’t too disappointed in him.”

Tim Clark (Aramayo): “Went back from the draw, settled okay. Couldn’t show a turn of foot on that ground.”

Blake Shinn (The Chosen One): “I thought he ran a tremendous race, I had to take the horse back to negate the wide draw, they didn’t go that fast, he made a searching run from the 650m and he hit the line strongly.”

Glyn Schofield (Cossetot)“I got shuffled back from a good spot early, but I had no horse underneath me.”

Mark Zahra (Declarationofheart): “Travelled really well just didn’t let go.”

Jason Collett (Costello): “Lovely run, felt like I was going to win it turning for home, but probably just struggled to quicken in that ground.”

Luke Nolen (Twinspier): “Probably outclassed and did a few things wrong in the run.”

Travis Wolfgram (Shaman): “Just not good enough.”

Brenton Avdulla (Yulong Tavion): “Just tried to ride him softly so he could finish, but he just struggled late.”
