Jockey Quotes - Apollo Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $300,000 Petaluma Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

Jason Collett (Fangirl): “When I was able to get Via back underneath me on the fence, I had her locked away, and I had Ceolwulf behind me I thought, ‘well, I’ve just got to wait’. I probably have the best turn of foot over 1400 so I just tried to utilise that.

“She’s not the cleanest out of the gates and that’s one thing I said after watching the replays, if I could get her out as clean as I can that could be the difference and it probably was.

“I was able to have Via back to the inside and Ceolwulf behind me and I thought, well I’ve probably got the turn of foot to outdo them, as long as I can hold together.

“She’s not the cleanest out and she can probably be her own worst enemy. But in saying that, she races best when she’s in her comfort zone and that obviously comes with being slow away.”

Fangirl wins the Apollo Stakes

Nash Rawiller (Lindermann): “Terrific return. He has trialled well and worked well and we thought he could run a cheeky race today, which he did. That mare, when you see her at her best she’s probably unbeatable, and full credit to my bloke he’s run into her on the wrong day but he’ll bounce out of that well.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Via Sistina): “She didn’t begin as well as I would have liked and that then had Fangirl angling me down to the rail. But she travelled fine and once I got into the clear her best work was late. So, beaten today but she ran a mighty race and she’s in for a good prep.”

Chad Schofield (Ceolwulf): “Really pleased with his return. We just dropped him out the back and switched him off. He sprinted home really well.”

Ashley Morgan (Arapaho): “He was excellent. Obviously it’s a trip short of his best but he’s been showing the signs that he’s in for a good prep at home. It was a good kick off for him.”

Tyler Schiller (Golden Path): “I thought he was quite good first-up. He probably isn’t as sharp as those horses over that distance but I think once he gets to that 1800m and 2000m he’s going to show plenty of improvement. But I was pretty pleased with him.”

Zac Lloyd (Atishu): “Lovely return by her. They’ve really sprinted that last 600 and she probably just got left a bit flat footed as they straightened but through the line she was doing her best work. So that’s promising going forward in her prep.”

Tim Clark (Zardozi): “She’ll take good improvement from the run and build into her prep.”
