Comments by the Racing NSW Handicapping Panel following the release of weights for the 157th running of the $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile on Saturday, 2nd April 2022.
A total of 139 nominations have been weighed for the 157th running of The Star Doncaster Mile (Group 1) (1600m), to be staged on Day 1 of The Star Championships at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 2nd April 2022.
Heading the weights is three-time Group 1 winner Zaaki (GB) allocated topweight of 58.5kg on a 50.0kg minimum (49.0kg for three year olds).
Zaaki (GB) is a previous winner of the 2021 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), the 2021 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and the 2021 Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).
Next in line on 56.5kg is Kolding (NZ), a dual Group 1 winner over the Randwick mile, winner of the 2021 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and in 2019 was the inaugural winner of the Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill.
Allocated with 56.0kg is the 2021 and current Doncaster Mile (1600m) champion Cascadian (GB), along with Mo’unga (NZ), a dual Group 1 winner of the 2021 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the 2021 Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m).
Another notable nomination is I’m Thunderstruck (NZ) who has been allocated 55.5kg, winner of the 2021 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and is the current 2021 Golden Eagle (1500m) champion.
The highest weighted mare is four time Group 1 winner Tofane (NZ) who has been allocated 55.5kg. Tofane (NZ) won the 2020 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), the 2021 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), the 2021 Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) and the 2022 Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m).
Another high-rated mare is Colette asked to carry 54.0kg. Colette is a winner of the 2020 Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m), the 2021 Group 1 Empire Rose (1600m) and the 2020 Golden Eagle (1500m).
Anamoe is the highest rated three-year-old and will be asked to carry 56.5kg. Anamoe is the winner of the 2021 Group 1 Sires' Produce (1400m) and the 2021 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m). Anamoe also placed in the 2021 Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
Heading the weights for the three-year-old fillies is Yearning with 49.5kg, winner of the 2021 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m). The 2021 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) winner Brutality is exempt from ballot and will carry 50.5kg. - Racing NSW Handicapping Panel
