Tamworth Cup has been run and won, the huge $2million Scone Cup Carnival goes off later this week while innovative Gunnedah Jockey Club begins its Winter Carnival of Cups next week.
The GJC has three meetings approaching where it will be featuring a Somerton Cup (May 18), Gunnedah Gold Cup (May 28) and Curlewis Cup (July 7).
“We are promoting it as ‘Gunnedah's Winter Carnival of Cups,” GJC Secretary Manager Mark Storey said.
Gunnedah trainer Gavin Groth is aiming last start Binnaway Cup winner About Time at the Somerton and Gunnedah Gold Cups. Fellow local Alex Martyn is aiming two of his horses at the meeting as well, while some of the larger provincial and metropolitan stables might also be represented.
“Paul Perry told me he was sending some horse to both our meetings,” Mr Storey said. “I'm trying to get Kris Lees, Allan Denham and Greg Hickman interested as well.”
Hickman started his training career at Gunnedah.
