Goulburn Trainers Thunder Down The Road To Wagga

It’s around a three-hour drive from Goulburn Racetrack to Wagga races and on Tuesday that worked out at a lucrative $8375 an hour for two Goulburn trainers and their owners.

In a successful day for Goulburn trainers, the Twin Star Racing operation headed by the Longmire sisters combined with another local in Mark Gee to notch a race to race double early on the Wagga card.

The progressive Longmire stable got the ball rolling with their 'stay-all-day' gelding Thunder Road. Having run on well to win over 2500m at the same track the start before, Thunder Road jumped right out in trip, winning the Riverina Cup over the unique 3800m trip with Nick Heywood on board.

Keeping that winning feeling going in the following race was Mark Gee. He got in on the act with his Street Sense filly, Strezzle.

In a smart training effort, Gee was able to get Strezzle to win her maiden at just start number two on a heavy track.

The filly was patiently ridden by Kayla Nisbet who persevered with inside runs to come home strongest over 1200m.

Whilst not quite adding to that winning, other Goulburn locals John Bateman and Tash Burleigh weren’t far off delivering a training trifecta with their gallopers Readabeel and Only In Red who both ran honest races without much luck in running.

Speaking on behalf of local trainers, Goulburn Race Club Secretary-Manager, Robyn Fife, said it was a positive day for Goulburn trainers and the club.

“Whilst we are focused on delivering a quality race meeting here at Goulburn next Monday, the next best thing is to see our local trainers do well when travelling their horses away," Ms Fife said.

“It’s a competitive industry and having one local trainer win a race anywhere is a result we love to see, however, when our trainers can win a number of races on the same day it helps create a real buzz and positive vibe around our club and its training facilities.”
