Gosford Provincial-Midway Champs Qualifier - A Runner-By-Runner Guide

By Neil Evans

An in-depth look at every runner in the $150,000 Polytrack Provincial-Midway Championships Qualifier (1200m) at Gosford on Saturday.

1. The Extreme Cat (Nathan Doyle, Newcastle): Tough galloper who appears over the odds resuming off two very progressive 1000m trials. Looks handily weighted considering his city form last prep, the challenge will be not drifting too far back from the inside draw on a smaller track and striking traffic problems.

2. General Salute (SCRATCHED).

3. Mogul Monarch (Kim Waugh, Wyong): Strong three-year-old building a handy record, and this shapes ideally stepping up 100m in trip third-up. Went forward and won with plenty in hand fresh before hitting the line impressively in Midway BM 72 company at Randwick. As long as he gets some cover and a clear look at them from the 300m, will be right in the finish.

4. Rolling Magic (Richard & Will Freedman, Rosehill): Another one well over the mark. Liked the first-up run in the Newcastle Qualifier which had more depth than this, working home late to finish just behind the placegetters. Drops sharply in weight here, and while best form is over further, with enough speed on up front, nothing will be attacking the line harder late. Huge chance at the value!

5. Money Team (Brad Widdup, Hawkesbury): Promising four-year-old gunning four a fourth straight provincial win this prep. Has defied the handicapper every time, carrying bigger weights and striking from just off the speed. Definitely with a chance, but tackling a better race this time, and the hurdle is finding some sort of handy spot from a wide barrier.

6. Starboard (Richard & Will Freedman, Rosehill): Metro-based stablemate of Rolling Magic who charged home to win first-up at Hawkesbury. Drops in weight for this tougher test, but unlikely given he'll be forced a long way back from an outside gate on an unsuitably tighter track.

7. Apache Breeze (Wayne Seeling, Wyong): Longshot who led and then dropped out a long way in the Qualifier at Newcastle a fortnight ago. Will improve off that, especially coming back a furlong in trip, but this is too rich.

8. Mailata (Bryce Heys, Warwick Farm): Two runs back from a spell in metro Midway BM 72 grade have only been fair at best, but I'm expecting sharp third-up improvement over 100m further. Can utilise a low draw to park further forward here, and is not without a chance at big odds.

9. Peak (Adam Duggan, Gosford): Sparingly race eight-year-old who is trained on the track. Steps up sharply from a handy closing effort in a BM 64 at Newcastle, and while his huge price is way over the mark, very doubtful he can figure here from an awkward gate.

10. Ballistic Therapy (Marc Conners, Warwick Farm): Another one resuming at a big price behind two city trials. Comes to hand early enough in his prep, and the drying track is a big plus, but would need all the breaks from a middle gate to be in the finish.

11. Photographics (SCRATCHED).

12. Miss Busslinger (SCRATCHED).

13. Titanium Miss (Tracey Bartley, Wyong): Showed improvement second-up at Newcastle sitting further forward, but looms under the odds in this line-up from a testing draw.

14. Stratafy (Neil Ward, Gosford): Returns to the track where she led all the way in a BM 64 on soft ground. Again in on the limit weight for this, and she's one big-priced runner definitely worth including in trifecta and first four plays.

15. Lutetia (SCRATCHED).

16. Let's Go Again (Kerry Parker, Kembla): Lightly raced mare who closed off well over a much shorter trip when resuming. Normally carries that form into her next start, and an important gear change has been made. Draws to find a nice on speed trail, and not without a genuine chance at a very big price.

17. Abuse Of Power (John Sharah, Warwick Farm): Has been fair to the line in two metro BM 72 runs back from a seven week let-up, but hard to see him figuring in this from a tough draw.

SELECTIONS:
4 ROLLING MAGIC
3 Mogul Monarch
8 Mailata
