Godolphin's Golden Gosford Run

By Brad Gray

John O’Shea has an outstanding record at Gosford this season with six winners and a further four placings from 16 starters, and the Godolphin trainer heads into Friday’s feature Gosford Cup Day meeting with a strong hand, headed by Asinara, Malice and Grunderzeit.

Malice is rated a $5 chance with TAB to take out the Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) and after a disappointing fourth in the Summer Cup behind Red Excitement, O’Shea is confident that the six-year-old can bounce back.

“I think he can be forgiven for his run the other day at Randwick when he finished just behind them. We had a Villiers program in mind for him but the weather intervened and in the end it lacked continuity,” O’Shea said.

“The small field should be a help.”

Malice will be looking to reproduce his ATC Cup run

Meanwhile, Grunderzeit will be out to prove he isn’t just a one trick pony with all five of his career wins coming at Canterbury. He further enhanced his reputation as a track specialist with a last start third in the Canterbury Classic.

“We were looking forward to him running at Canterbury last start, but the gate made it difficult. He’s drawn wide again, but he’s trained on well and if he can get some luck I think he can make his presence felt,” O’Shea said of his Takeover Target Stakes runner.

Grunderzeit's Canterbury Classic placing

In the Belle Of The Turf Stakes, the enigmatic Asinara will wear the royal blue and gradually looks to be working herself back into form.

“Last time out she had a lot of weight and ran well. She drops to 54kg here and I think she has a really good chance.”
