Godolphin Duo Make No Secret About Golden Rose Claims

By Ray Hickson

It could be advantage Godolphin in the Group 1 $1m Chandon Golden Rose later this month after the blue army dominated the three-year-old features at Rosehill on Saturday.

Golden Mile made a mess of his rivals in the Group 3 Schweppes Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) then some 40 minutes later In Secret stamped herself as a top class filly with a runaway victory in the Group 2 $250,000 Furphy Run To The Rose (1200m).

The latter assumed favouritism for the Golden Rose (1400m) run on September 24 at $6 with TAB while Golden Mile sits on the second line at $8. Both started the day as $15 chances.

In Secret only took her place in the Run To The Rose after trainer James Cummings elected to pull her out of the Furious Stakes a week earlier when rain inundated Randwick and it paid off.

Cummings’ stable rep Darren Beadman said In Secret, who was a rare yearling sales purchase for $900,000, has always been held in high regard and believes the world is her oyster this spring.

“The race set up nicely for her but she’s just been crying out for a dry track,’’ Beadman said.

“The team has been very patient with her and she’s top shelf. Her first two runs have laid a great foundation for the spring.”

Beadman is confident In Secret will run out a strong 1400m if Cummings and Godolphin elect to push on to the Golden Rose and said she deserves favouritism on what she showed on Saturday as she raced 1-3/4 lengths clear of Best Of Bordeaux with Sweet Ride a close third.

“That doesn’t surprise me and she gets in with a filly’s weight,’’ he said.

“It’s a nice position to be in, I don’t know which way the team will go, but we’ll sit back and wait.

“She’s a very valuable filly. If ridden in similar fashion, three pairs or four pairs back, I think she will get 1400m definitely.”

Jockey Tommy Berry sounded an ominous warning to for the remainder of the spring saying In Secret still has plenty of improvement to come.

“When I cantered her to the gates, you ride these horses and they just give you that feel of a good horse,” he said.

“She doesn't look like she's there yet but you still get that feel their action, the way they glide across the ground.

“At the top of the straight when I pulled the stick through to the right, she just took off. That was a pretty good feeling.”

While all honours went to the winner of the Run To The Rose, as In Secret clocked the race’s fastest last 600m of 33.47 (Punter's Intelligence) and 200m of 11.23, connections of Golden Slipper winner Fireburn would be pleased with her fifth placing first-up.

Last season’s champion two-year-old posted the second fastest last 600m, running 33.66, and she was the fastest between the 400m-200m clocking 10.98 which was a tick faster than stablemate Sejardan (10.99).

She drifted from $6 favourite out to $11 in the Golden Rose market.

Ming Dynasty winner Golden Mile has a Golden Rose pedigree being by the 2016 winner Astern and Beadman said while he enjoyed the run of the race his 3-1/4 length win was so impressive.

“They don’t win much better than that,’’ Beadman said.

“The race was really set up nicely for him when the pace was on and he was able to sit back and have a few to stalk. He’s got a lot of quality this colt. He’s got the looks and he’s got good ability.

“He is out of a Group-winning mare by a Golden Rose winner so he ticks a lot of boxes.

“The best thing I like about this horse is his attitude. He’s got a great set of jowls on him and when you push the button, he goes.”

In Secret wins the Run To The Rose

What the Run To The Rose beaten jockeys said:

James McDonald (Best Of Bordeaux): “Good run. He jumped extremely well, got into a lovely rhythm. He was softened up in the mid-stages. It was put to him early in the straight but he dug deep.”

Chad Schofield (Sweet Ride): “He went very well again. A brave run.”

Jason Collett (Sejardan): “Very happy.”

Sam Clipperton (Swiss Exile): “A disappointing run from him. I was expecting a bold showing. Whether something comes up in the next 48 hours we’ll wait and see.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Promitto): “It was a nice run by him. Just stepped a tiny bit slow but he got into a nice rhythm. A fast run race for a big horse he might be looking for a bit further.”

Hugh Bowman (Nettuno): “I wasn’t disappointed with him. A bit more room would have helped up the straight. But I thought he ran to his form.”

Brenton Avdulla (Fireburn): “Really happy with her. She got stuck behind a couple of slow ones. She hit the line very well. If she drew a gate in two weeks she’ll be hard to beat.”

William Pike (Political Debate): “Had me off the bridle a long way from home. They went quick.”
