Gary Harley's Late Mail (Wyong, Thursday)

Gary Harley

Blake Shinn, fresh from Group 1 success in last Saturday's $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile, will carry plenty of the punters' cash at Wyong on Thursday.

The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey will ride in seven of the eight races with the only other race for apprentice riders only. Six of Shinn’s rides will be either favourite or close to it.

Shinn kicks off the day aboard the Chris Waller-trained Enlightened Boy, an impressive recent Rosehill trial winner. Shinn then rides the promising King Hewitt (Race 2), stayer Nothing Too Hard (Race 3), the speedy Highly Influential the favourite in Race 4, first starter Karaage (Race 5), Legadema (Race 7) and Kanguru (Race 8).

RACE 1 (BENDIGO BANK MAIDEN PLATE, 1350m): Stone had every chance when runner-up to Princess Mia second-up at Gosford recently. However, the winner went super and Stone will be fitter this time around. Enlightened Boy is first-up after a nice trial win and he wasn’t far away last prep. Everlasting Love was grabbed on the line last start.
SELECTIONS: 4 STONE, 1 ENLIGHTENED BOY, 7 EVERLASTING LOVE

RACE 2 (JA DOORS CLASS 1, 1600m): Penske was brave first-up at Newcastle when runner-up and if he runs here will be hard to beat. He led from the start first-up but was taken on in a fast run race but fought hard to go down by half a length. King Hewitt won well on debut at Newcastle then had every chance when fourth there on March 31. My Song has been placed in his past two starts at Hawkesbury and Canberra.
SELECTIONS: 1 PENSKE, 2 KING HEWITT, 3 MY SONG

RACE 3 (ODDFISH MEDIA MAIDEN PLATE, 2100m): Nothing Too Hard is knocking on the door and after three runs back gets to a favourable trip. The gelding stormed home when beaten a long head over 1860 metres at Newcastle last start and all three starts this prep have been full of merit. Just Gorgeous is a front-runner and is close to a win after two recent seconds. High Dude’s second-up run was a big improvement and he has a chance.
SELECTIONS: 7 NOTHING TOO HARD, 9 JUST GORGEOUS, 5 HIGH DUDE

RACE 4 (PATIOWORLD MAIDEN, 1000m): Highly Influential is a fast 3yo resuming. He was narrowly beaten twice at Gosford after leading in November. He led all the way to win a recent Warwick Farm trial and he will give these something to chase from barrier one. Lolliepop is on debut after a fast-finishing second behind Highly Influential in a recent trial. Teodosio was never off the bit in a recent trial and is a big watch.
SELECTIONS: 1 HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL, 5 LOLLIEPOP, 3 TEODOSIO

RACE 5 (SUNNYLAKE SHORES 3YO MAIDEN, 1200m): Soir de Lune was a dual acceptor but this is the easier option. He has never raced but he led all the way off the track to win a recent Goulburn trial. The soft draw is ideal. Mahjong Rose won a three-horse trial easily recently and she is speedy. Karaage is on debut after a quiet trial.
SELECTIONS: 4 SOIR DE LUNE, 8 MAHJONG ROSE, 3 KARAAGE

RACE 6 (TUMBI WHOLESALE MEATS CLASS 2, 1200m): Cuba drops in class here and with 55kg on his back he is well placed. He was beaten by a nose first-up on this track then finished down the track at Warwick Farm. Fitter this time and with a soft draw he won’t be far off the pace. Lieutenant Dan has an adverse draw but he is going okay and he has a good chance. Sleepwalker won a recent trial and is a winner on the track.
SELECTIONS: 2 CUBA, 3 LIEUTENANT DAN, 4 SLEEPWALKER

RACE 7 (NBN NEWS CANNONBALL BENCHMARK 70, 1100m): Allegheny is pretty quick and she has had a freshen up. There are a couple of speedsters in the race but Allegheny should lead and she has a 3kg claim for the in-form Rachel Hunt. Legadema is another speedster which had good form prior to a last start Warwick Farm failure. Langoustine has a good record and she has the rails barrier.
SELECTIONS: 2 ALLEGHENY, 4 LEGADEMA, 8 LANGOUSTINE

RACE 8 (NBN COMMUNITY PARTNERS BENCHMARK 71, 1350m): Penske has the rails barrier and will be hard to run down if he starts in this race. He was brave first-up when nailed late when taken on in front at Newcastle first-up. Teahupo’o had a good first campaign and he is first-up after a recent trial. Bodhi Blue is consistent.
SELECTIONS: 2 PENSKE, 4 TEAHUPO’O, 7 BODHI BLUE
