Furphy Run To The Rose Paves A Golden Path To Group One

Four Group races including a crucial pathway to a coveted Group 1 at the upcoming Sydney Everest Carnival feature at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday on Run To The Rose Day.

The Group 2 $250,000 Furphy Run To The Rose – including the return to racing of the Longines Golden Slipper champion in Fireburn – is the main event of a 10-race card, attracting 152 entries.

The Furphy Run To The Rose comes a fortnight before the Group 1 $1 million Chandon Golden Rose, also run at Rosehill Gardens.

Six of the past 10 winners of the Group 1 Chandon Golden Rose have won or been placed in the Furphy Run To The Rose while two other Chandon Golden Rose winners in that time also ran in both races.

Saturday includes the running of the Group 2 $250,000 Fujitsu General Theo Marks Stakes, Group 2 $250,000 Irresistable Pools Sheraco Stakes and Group 3 $200,000 Schweppes Ming Dynasty Quality.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing and Wagering, James Ross said Saturday’s meeting would have a major impact on upcoming Sydney Everest Carnival features.

“It is fantastic to see Rosehill Gardens host another high-quality program, with the Fujitsu General Theo Marks Stakes field headlined by two Group 1 winners in Kementari and Kolding,” Mr Ross said.

“The Furphy Run To The Rose has again attracted an outstanding field of three-year-olds including the first two horses from this year’s Longines Golden Slipper.

“The race is always a key pathway to the Group 1 Chandon Golden Rose in two weeks time as we head towards the official start next week of Sydney’s spectacular $66 million Spring Carnival."

Best Of Bordeuax has opened a $3.80-$3.40 TAB favourite in the Furphy Run To The Rose for trainer Kacy Fogden and Sydney’s champion jockey James McDonald.

Trainer Gary Portelli’s Longines Golden Slipper-winning filly Fireburn with Brenton Avdulla aboard is at $6-$6.50 with TAB as she aims to create further history as the first filly to win the race.

Another filly In Secret for trainer James Cummings is $6-$5.50 in early betting whilst colt Nettuno for Queensland trainer Tony Gollan and jockey Hugh Bowman has been well supported from $6-$5.

Since 2001, 15 winners of the Furphy Run To The Rose have started within the top three favourites in the race. Mr Mozart for Hawkes Racing and with William Pike to ride has opened a well-supported $3.60-$3.40 favourite in the Group 2 Fujitsu General Theo Marks Stakes just in front of the strongly supported Ellsberg ($4.60-$3.80) for trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou and jockey Chad Schofield.

Next in betting is talented filly Jamaea ($8-$7.50) for trainers Robert and Luke Price and jockey Tommy Berry.

The Group 2 Irresistable Pools Sheraco Stakes is headed in TAB markets by two outstanding fillies in Shades of Rose and Espiona. Shades of Rose trained by Bjorn Baker and ridden by Rachel King is at $3.50-$3.20 as she aims for a fourth consecutive victory at Rosehill Gardens.

Espiona for trainer Chris Waller and James McDonald is a close $3.50-$3.40 second favourite. Chris Waller is looking to win a fifth Sheraco Stakes since 2014.
