Day A Chance To Break Back To Form (Goulburn Sunday)

Jockey Louise Day heads to Goulburn on Sunday as part of the deep eight race Goulburn Australia Goulburn Cup showcase meeting.

Day has three rides, her Sunday tilt spearheaded by Occhiata (Matt Dale / $4.80 TAB) in one of the day’s features, The Newgate Farm The Guy Walter.

Day has been back in the saddle for just over a week now after a six-week hiatus courtesy of a torn MCL via a barrier trial mishap.

Despite it not being a planned break it could be the silver lining freshen up needed for the hard-working Day as she aims to reestablish her saddle shimmy.

“It’s the longest break I’ve had from riding …ever! I’m feeling good after the treatment and I’m back riding track work at Warwick Farm and a bit at Kembla Grange as well”, Day offered.

Day is excited about teaming up with the Matt Dale stable on Occhiata in The Newgate Farm The Guy Walter.

“She’s a big mare but is also adaptable to how a race unfolds. She needs room but I learnt a lot about her last campaign when she raced really well,“ Day said.

The mare had a breakout campaign over the summer-autumn period, posting three wins, two placings and a top five Highway Handicap result.

Day did the steering in four of those contests and is looking forward to renewing their association come Sunday in The Guy Walter.

“I thought she went super first up in the Highway at Rosehill. She looked to build into her race and finished by hitting the line over a shorter trip,” Day observed.

Day also gives Occhiata a few extra ticks for Sunday.

“She gets out in trip which should suit her, and it looks like a race that she can really give them a good rattle in”.

This year is the 10th edition of The Guy Walter, a race named in honour of the Hall of Fame trainer.

Day will also pilot Spiritly ($13 TAB) for Wayne Hudd in another of the day’s main races, the Graeme Spackman / Goulpro Country Magic B66 Showcase Handicap over a mile.

“He’s up in grade but his last two runs have been very genuine where’s he finished close up.”

He’s another galloper that Day is no stranger to.

“Ï won on him at Wagga this time last year on a heavy track and he gets a mile strongly. With a plum draw he should be strong late.”

Day has also been booked to ride Sturty by the Joe Ible camp in the last on the card. The gelding has drawn carpark country but will be looking to bounce back from a plain result last start.

Goulburn’s track is currently rated a Soft 5 for Sunday’s Goulburn Australia Goulburn Cup showcase meeting with Race 1 timed to go at 12.30pm.
