Davies Preparing To Raise The Bar On 'Woolly' Kobison

By Ray Hickson

Our Kobison won’t be anyone’s pick of the yard when he returns at Randwick on Saturday but trainer Angela Davies says he’s certainly fit and ready to launch his new campaign.

And the Gosford trainer isn’t going to be afraid to raise the bar quickly should the gelding make a winning return in the Ranvet Handicap (1000m).

The lightly raced five-year-old has had the benefit of two barrier trials but Davies warned his appearance still has come cleaning up to do and that will come with the run and the move into spring.

“He’s come back a bigger, stronger, horse but he still has a bit of a woolly coat,’’ she said.

“He’s just starting to drop his coat now, he will still look a bit furry and wintry in the enclosure so I reckon after this one his coat will end up flying out.

“But he’s sailed through the preparation and it’s been good.”

Davies said she wanted Our Kobison’s second barrier trial at Wyong to be stronger than his first at Scone and he put six lengths on his rivals with jockey Andrew Gibbons reporting the gelding did it all by himself.

“I said to him to let him roll along and he said he didn’t have to,’’ she said.

“Gibbo just said he didn’t even give him a squeeze, he didn’t get anywhere near the bottom of him, and he just wanted to do it himself.

“We gave him a quiet trial at Scone because the track was wet and we wanted him to open up a bit in that second trial.

"They don’t take any prisoners when you go to Randwick.”

James McDonald will ride Our Kobison at Randwick, $1.95 with TAB on Wednesday, he’s had three rides for two wins and his last start third back in early March.

He wasn’t suited to leading that race and after being attacked in front Davies said it was still a good performance and she was happy enough to end that campaign there.

Our Kobison, a winner of five from nine starts, contested a 1000m dash at Randwick to kick off his previous prep and he was caught three wide in a nine horse field and was stalked by Tintookie, who pounced on him, before he turned the tables two weeks later.

Davies said a wide draw again in a small field makes things interesting for McDonald but she’s just like to see him get some favours in the run.

“If he’d drawn 7 of 8 at Rosehill I wouldn’t have been happy but it’s 7 of 8 at Randwick,’’ she said.

“I just think he needs a bunny to follow. If he has to get back to get some cover that’s where we’ve got to be and he’s got all the time up and over the rise.

Our Kobison wins a Wyong trial on July 29

“If he won with a bit of authority you’d probably be tempted to go to something like the Show County. That would certainly be on my agenda.”

The Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) is run at Randwick on August 24.
