Unbeaten colt Cambar is giving trainer Gary Colvin similar vibes to his Country Championships winner Another One and on the back of a game TAB Highway win at Rosehill the three-year-old appears likely to have the chance to emulate his stablemate in 2025.
Another One is the won the South East regional qualifying race twice and he was runner-up in the Final in 2021 before going one better a year later.
The problem Colvin has in the wake of Cambar’s win over 1100m is what to do between now and the $150,000 race at Wagga Wagga on March 1.
What he has no doubt about is that the colt has plenty of potential.
“I think he’s the real deal, I think he’s going to be a nice handy horse,’’ Colvin said.
“I don’t bring them to Sydney unless I think they’re up to it.
“I think this horse is up with (Another One), they are different sort of horses. Another One wanted 1400m to a mile with this bloke 1400m might see him out.”
Tim Clark settled Cambar, $3.40 equal favourite, just off the speed and after taking a bit of time to wind up he was able to cut down Miss Rebel near the line with Spiritchaser in third.
The style of the win told Colvin, and Clark, that the 1400m of the Country Championships shouldn’t an issue.
What he’ll spend time deciding in the aftermath of the win is whether to keep him going for another run this year or just set his sights on arriving at Wagga with a run or two under his belt.
The juggling act is that Cambar has now won three races and the Country Championships is restricted to Class 5 horses and below so wins come at a cost.
“I wanted to get this one over and done with, whether we give him another run or a break we’ll work that out,’’ he said.
“To take a nice position and hit the line like that I’m not concerned about 1400m.
“He’s a nice horse, it was good to see him travel. You bring them down to get used to travelling and he did it really well.
“I haven’t worried about gelding him, he just seems to do everything right. He’s a good horse to handle., just a lovely horse to have.”
Clark was impressed with what he felt in his first ride on Cambar and gave the impression the best is yet to come.
He said the colt seemed to settle well in the run and reacted when he was asked to finish the race off.
“He’s progressing really well, Gary presented him beautifully here today,’’ Clark said.
“He’s a horse that has nice talent, he’s going to get better as he does more racing.
“He’ll run 1400m, even though he is a colt he has a great attitude. He rests well and 1400m won’t be beyond him.”

Meanwhile, Colvin said Another One will be out for another three to four weeks before returning to work with the Albury and Wagga Wagga Cups in mind.
His stable star sustained a minor injury when he lashed out at the stable and required a break but Colvin said the seven-year-old has no issues and will be fine to race on.
