Canterbury Winners - Tips For Wednesday 28th August

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Canterbury meeting. Selections based on a good track.

Race 1 - 1:25PM RANVET HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

5. Maori Chief was sent out an odds-on favourite at his only start to date and tried hard running second to Bauhinia, who measured up quite well in Group company last weekend. Open to improvement on that and looks hard to beat.

Dangers: 2. Seascape hit the line well when the race was all over first-up at Hawkesbury at 1100m. Has that under the belt, an extra 100m and gate one so she’s a likely improver too. 4. Indigo Star was solid in betting at his debut back at the end of May and wasn’t disgraced finishing fifth behind Depth Of Character. Trialled since and worth keeping an eye on. 1. Gai's Artist won on debut back in October last year then only start since was in the Silver Slipper. Blinkers on and drawn to be prominent. Keep safe.

How to play it: Maori Chief WIN ($1.95 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 2:00PM TAB HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

2. Harry’s Bar has done nothing wrong in two starts where he’s found one better on both occasions. Drifter in betting when runner-up here three weeks ago and looks set to get a nice run again. Doesn’t need to improve much to go one better.

Dangers: 6. Peschiera comes through the same race and she held her ground to run third, about a length and a half astern. If that’s the right form line she’s a definite chance. 12. Ti Amo Tanto is on debut for the Chris Waller yard and her trials, split two months apart, have been even. Tricky gate but worth keeping safe. 7. Reasonable was runner-up here fresh last time in and comes off a nice trial win. One of the chances.

How to play it: Harry’s Bar EACH-WAY ($3.90 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 - 2:35PM HEADWATER @ VINERY STUD HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

8. Weeping Woman is coming through the grades well and stepped up to knock over a short priced favourite to score at Hawkesbury a couple of weeks ago. Obviously tougher again here but gets gate one and given her late strength the extra ground won’t hurt. Go well.

Dangers: 2. Countyourblessings won well here in February and spelled after tackling a Group 3 through the carnival. Two trials leading in have been sound and has to be respected back in her right grade. 3. Makena has mixed her form a bit to date and is first-up since a Listed race at Eagle Farm in April when safely held as a $31 chance. Trialled up north leading in so keep an eye on the market given the drawn and jockey booking. 5. Nostalgia is lightly raced for a five-year-old and hasn’t raced for a year. Favourite in all four starts to date and comes into this after a solid second in a Rosehill trial last week. Drawn to have every chance.

How to play it: Weeping Woman WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 - 3:10PM BRAZEN BEAU @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Hi Dubai is back in class after a close up fourth as favourite at Rosehill where she hit the lead after sitting outside the speed and was reeled in. Back to the 1100m suits her, draws okay and is well worth another chance.

Dangers: 5. Wingardium might be a sharp improver on a second-up failure behind Hi Dubai at Randwick on heavy ground. Failed in all three attempted in the heavy so getting back onto good ground will be a plus. Keep in mind. 6. Mawjood takes on older horses off a freshen after having his chance to run down Mayfair at Rosehill a month ago. Lightly raced and has some upside so stays under notice. 1. Chief Conductor has been thereabouts without winning third time in. Beaten favourite when running third at Kensington two weeks ago. Good record at this track and is one of the chances.

How to play it: Hi Dubai WIN ($2.60 TAB Fixed Odds).

Hi Dubai runs fourth at Randwick on August 10

Race 5 - 3:45PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

8. The Englishman is racing well without any luck at all. Should have won here two starts ago in a similar race then again well supported and found himself in the worst ground at Rosehill. Finds JMac to ride here and with a clear shot he gets another chance to break through.

Dangers: 4. Monfelicity comes through the same race where she finished just ahead in sixth. Did seem to have her chance but was also closer to the inside and second-up run suggested she’s come back well. Has each-way claims. 3. Mascaret ran third in that event at Rosehill after settling back and looping the field from the turn. She gets in nicely with the 3kg claim so stays under notice. 2. Scalextrics won well at Wyong to make it four straight then just denied a fifth by Gracilistyla here three weeks ago. Up to the 1900m now but honest and has to be included.

How to play it: The Englishman WIN ($3.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

The Englishman runs seventh at Rosehill on August 17

Race 6 - 4:20PM HYLAND RACE COLOURS HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

1. Flying Destiny is well placed again with the claim as he’ll carry 1kg less than his easy all the way win here three weeks ago. This race isn’t quite as restricted but he’s in good form and has the positive racing style that will give him his chance to repeat.

Dangers: 5. Denman Star has been flying since joining the Angela Davies stable with successive wins at Newcastle and he showed a sharp turn of foot to pick them up from the back there last time. Hard to ignore while in this mood. 8. Mad Deel bumped into a progressive type when resuming at Kensington with a solid second behind Yorkshire. Better for that and a firmer track is in his favour. 3. Tavs hasn’t raced since April but this is the easiest race he’s contested since he won at Kembla back in January. Well worth respecting.

How to play it: Flying Destiny WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds).

Flying Destiny wins at Canterbury on August 7

Race 7 - 4:55PM JAMES SQUIRE HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

3. Noble Conqueror doesn’t win out of turn but looks perfectly suited to improve his strike rate on the back two excellent efforts since coming back to Sydney. Closed late over this course before up in class and back 150m when just beaten at Rosehill last time. Big chance.

Dangers: 9. High Dandy was always in control when he resumed with an all the way six length win at Hawkesbury a couple of weeks ago. Up in class but no surprise at all to see him take the next step. 5. Green Belt just battled on the synthetic at Pakenham first-up, since trialled at Rosehill and in the small field gets the chance to show something. 7. Sweysive raced handy and weakened second-up here three weeks ago. Capable of better.

How to play it: Noble Conqueror WIN ($2.30 TAB Fixed Odds).

Noble Conqueror runs second at Rosehill on August 17
