Canterbury Winners - Tips For Wednesday 24th July

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Canterbury meeting. Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 - 12:50PM HARRY ANGEL @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

12. Canpikapony didn’t run up to some support on debut back in March but appears to have come back in good order based on her easy Rosehill trial win recently. Took up a position in that trial so from the good gate she should have every chance to convert.

Dangers: 2. Sweet Patriot has performed well at double figure odds in two runs back from a spell. Again draws awkwardly but the way she’s found the line in those two runs if she gets onto the right back to follow home she can be right in the finish. 1. Grassburn comes through the same race at Warwick Farm finishing a handy fourth to Sweet Patriot’s second. Last time she saw this type of surface she ran a nice second to Depth Of Character here. Keep in mind. 8. Havasu Falls trialled okay back in March then reappeared a couple of weeks back to win on a heavy track at Hawkesbury, finding the line nicely. Draws soft and one to keep an eye on.

How to play it: Canpikapony WIN ($3.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 1:25PM CASINO PRINCE @ VINERY STUD HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

3. Zouripper had no luck at all first-up at Warwick Farm, while he finished midfield he certainly wasn’t able to be tested. Attracted support there too. Has a tough gate to overcome but in what looks an open sort of race is a good each-way chance.

Dangers: 1. Maracaibo Sun had his chance chasing Khaznah home here on a heavy track three weeks ago but is fitter, gets JMac and a firmer surface. So he could easily go one better. 5. Trunk is the likely leader from the inside alley and he did quite a good job to rally and hold third at Warwick Farm after being pressured coming to the turn. Definite chance. 7. The Grey has found one better in both starts to date but the form ties in okay and he might find a better set up with a rise in trip and a good to soft track. Should roll forward and is worth considering.

How to play it: Zouripper EACH-WAY ($7.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 - 2:00PM TAB HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

4. Cosmonova is a lot better suited back in grade and away from a heavy track after failing behind In Flight second-up. Since then she’s trialled strongly, draws ideally and on her previous efforts she’s a major contender in this.

Dangers: 3. Khaznah started $1.35 and led all the way to a comfortable maiden win over 1200m on a heavy track here three weeks ago. Rises 5kg and jumps in class but will be right up on the speed from a kind draw. Can measure up. 5. Magnucat was unbeaten in his first preparation with wins at Muswellbrook and Scone and resumes here after a trial win at Rosehill, which last Saturday’s winner Iron Man comes through. Keep safe. 2. Mafia led throughout when resuming at Wyong then not able to get on the speed up in class at Randwick. Forgive that and while he will need some luck here he has blinkers on and the chance to press forward.

How to play it: Cosmonova WIN ($3.60 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 - 2:35PM VALE DAVID MORROW HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

10. Humming is an interesting runner having her first start for Joe Pride. Has an honest record with placings at Werribee and Morphettville prior to switching yards. Plenty to like about her two trials including a dominant Warwick Farm win last week. Respect.

Dangers: 6. Flying Thinker has been dominant on heavy tracks at Newcastle and Scone in her last two starts so has to convert that to better ground and in town. But Mitchell Bell sticking with her is a good sign, she’s drawn to get a nice run and stays under notice. 12. Maz Kanata has always shown some ability and it wouldn’t surprise if he puts herself in the finish. Sound effort when favourite at Newcastle third-up running into a placing and has each-way claims. 11. Lady Extreme improved on an even first-up effort for a closing third at Hawkesbury on heavy ground. Firmer track suits and still has upside.

How to play it: Humming WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 5 - 3:10PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

5. All In The Mind ran a handy race first-up over this course then struck a heavy track and was never in the hunt three weeks ago. Given a tickover trial since then and a better surface appeals. From the good draw he should be competitive.

Dangers: 4. Unlimited is another import who didn’t really fire in his first prep but liked his recent trial at Rosehill and resumes in a suitable grade and distance range. Check betting for a lead. 6. Osman is racing well and followed a solid Wyong win with a third at Newcastle over 1400m. Down 1kg after the claim and he’s so honest it’s hard to leave him out. 3. Danish Prince is going well without winning, did win one at Warwick Farm three back but lost on protest, and comes away from a heavy track. Whether he can be as effective remains to be seen but he’s an on pacer and will give himself every chance.

How to play it: All In The Mind EACH-WAY ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 6 - 3:45PM TOYOTA FORKLIFTS HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

2. Flying Destiny is going to relish a firmer track and if he can get across from the wide gate looks well placed to go close. Last couple on heavy have been honest and had a tough run when third at Warwick Farm two weeks ago. Just needs that early luck and he’s in the mix.

Dangers: 9. Triskelion was disappointing when resuming at Hawkesbury as an easing favourite. Just battled on the heavy and while only beaten a couple of lengths it was still below expectation. Down 4kg and onto a better track he could be a sharp improver. 5. How Dare You won nicely at Scone over the carnival first-up but didn’t fire on a heavy track at Rosehill six weeks ago when right in the market. Freshened and not tested at all in subsequent trial. Could bounce back. 10. Valiancy is back in grade on her last start effort at Randwick where she was handy on the inside of the track but weakened from the turn. Has been in the market a bit lately in this sort of grade so worth one more chance.

How to play it: Flying Destiny EACH-WAY ($7.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 7 - 4:20PM DUNDEEL AT ARROWFIELD HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

8. Guzumped has the right form around him and a little better set up too compared to his last start third at Warwick Farm where he came from near last. First and second from the race fought out a finish at Rosehill last weekend. Down 4kg on that for a class rise but looks well placed.

Dangers: 11. Fun Sunday has to be respected out of the same race, she was with her stablemate on the turn and only finished a length astern. Both runs back have been sound and she won’t mind firmer footing. 5. Monarchs Brae was right in the market last time but didn’t go a yard at all tailing out to run last on a heavy track at Warwick Farm with no excuse found. Placed previous two over this course and capable of improvement on top of the ground. 1. Asgoodassobergets has been thereabouts of late and he’s one who will appreciate a better track after even efforts on heavy his last two. Chance to show up.

How to play it: Guzumped WIN ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds).
