Canterbury Winners - Tips For Wednesday 16th August

Tips by Brad Gray

Brad Gray's tips and insights for Wednesday’s Canterbury Park meeting. There are winners to be found for seven races!

The track is in the Good range and the rail is in the True position.

Race 1 - 1:25PM MCGRATH ESTATE AGENTS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Songlike is the horse to beat, as the market suggests. The daughter of Your Song is a slick little galloper and will take catching from barrier 1 and with two runs under her belt this time in. She has run two seconds - the first beaten by the untapped debutant Marble before the Godolphin blue again got the better of her with classy filly Alizee proving too strong at the finish. There are no Godolphin horses here this time and she will catch the likes of Showtime on the hop fitness-wise.

Danger: Faeger was very good at Wyong last start and slips into the race a touch under the radar. He was beaten fair and square by Beacon but he looks a talented galloper. In the Snowden camp and from the cosy draw, he has to be respected. My Zebrinka finds a hot maiden but has shown ability in his trials winning all four of them.

How to play it: Songlike WIN ($2.30 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 2 - 2:00PM CASINO PRINCE@VINERY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Want to be with Solar Patch who looks the goods having returned a gelding this campaign. He was brilliant winning at Gosford first-up before finishing third at Randwick last start finishing alongside highly-regarded colt Addictive Nature. That stacks up well back to midweek company. He has drawn kindly so should’ve have too much trouble putting himself in a controlling position. As his first up run suggested, suspect his finish is more brilliant if he can get cover. Gary Moore believes that this three-year-old can measure up Group company eventually.

Danger: Acqume is still eligible for maiden company but on the strength of her two career runs, a second to Gunnison and a third to Alizee, she has the talent to run a big race in this with 53kg on her back. She is a filly worth following through the grades. Villa Carlotta is already Group Two-placed.

How to play it: Solar Patch WIN ($5 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 3 - 2:35PM TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

Notio has run second in three of his last four starts, three of which were in Melbourne. However, it was encouraging to see him bring his form to Sydney last start chasing home the very much in form Special Missile who of course has since won again. He ran home that day in comparable splits to Imanui which bodes well for this assignment. This Duporth four-year-old has his foot firmly on the till and catches what looks his main danger Up ‘N’ Rolling first up.

Danger: Up ‘N’ Rolling hasn’t been missed by early shoppers with TAB Fixed Odds shortening the five-year-old from $4.60 open to now $3. The last time we saw him was of course a horror show for his supporters, being strung up before rattling home to just miss. He should’ve walked in. Didn’t think his trials were as sharp as we’ve seen from him in the past though.

How to play it: Notio WIN ($3.60 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 4 - 3:10PM #THERACES HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Irithea has returned a different animal this preparation cruising home to two provincial victories. It’s been a typically patient build up from Bjorn Baker to get this mare to town and now she is here, she’ll no doubt measure up. Apprentice Jean Van Overmeire, who takes 3kg off her back, should’ve have too much trouble bouncing her out to be handy in the run from barrier 2. As we know with this stable, once a horse hits form, they can hold it for a long period. Tipping the picket fence to remain intact.

Danger: Vienna Romance’s record doesn’t reflect her ability. The only problem is that she fails to turn placings into wins. She’ll be thereabouts again. Savapinksi might find these a touch sharp but she has upside resuming after a solid provincial win back in March.

How to play it: Irithea WIN ($4.60 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 5 - 3:45PM TAB HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

Parlay Vous lines up for John O’Shea here and tipping the ex-Godolphin head trainer will kick things the next chapter of his career off in the best possible manner. The Jimmy Choux four-year-old has had two starts, under the care of Joe Pride, this time in and measured up against some handy horses including Kings Of Leon, Spending To Win and Argent D’or. This is a perfect assignment for him to bring up another overdue win. He has drawn to get the right run and Kerrin McEvoy steers.

Danger: Lubiton is the class runner hence she lumps the big weight. She already boasts a Group placing when running second to Dawn Wall in the Kembla Grange Classic. Her trials have been good but is she sharp enough to win over 1250m? The $3 is short enough to find out.

How to play it: Parlay Vous WIN ($3.40 TAB Fixed Odds)

Race 6 - 4:20PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Beacon mustered quickly to put himself outside of the leader on debut and hoping that early toe can see him get across from the awkward draw here. He was heavily backed at Wyong starting $1.60 and liked the way he found the line when the race was there to be won or lost. It was the win of a horse destined for better things. Beacon will certainly know he is in a race here against some seasoned older horses but have got plenty of time for this three-year-old Lonhro gelding. Stick with him.

Danger: Invienna was trapped wide the trip chasing a hot speed first up and was entitled to finish further away than she did. Will get a much softer run from the inside draw. Just hope the fresh run wasn’t a gut buster. Rebel Miss was outstanding first up behind Nictock but maps to give a big start again. Keen to see if Princess Posh can build on her form from last campaign.

How to play it: Beacon WIN ($3.10 TAB Fixed Odds)

Beacon’s impressive debut win

Race 7 - 4:55PM TAB REWARDS HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

Street Pursuit has an off-again-on-again form pattern but really keen to see him out to the trip of 1900m. If he can get control of the race from the outset, he’s every chance of stacking up his rivals and pinching this. Liked the manner in which he drove to the line at Canterbury over 1550m last start to bring up win number three. These Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott style of horses are so hard to get past when they are rock hard fit and find their winning form.

Danger: Quick Defence doesn’t have to improve on his last start effort to be in the finish again here. Maps to settle closer too. Wahng Wah looked to have found her calling out to a staying trip last start. Against her here though is swapping Rosehill for Canterbury and the inside draw which means she’ll likely have to weave instead of swoop.
