Broadside has been installed as the $2.80 favourite for Saturday’s $150,000 Listed McKell Cup at Royal Randwick. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding is backing up from an easy win in the Bart Cummings Hall Of Fame Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens last weekend.
With Josh Parr aboard, Broadside kicked away at the turn for home, holding off a fast-finishing Get On The Grange to win by one and a half lengths.
“We were delighted with the run and it’s given us the confidence to push on with him,” Co-Trainer Adrian Bott said.
The McKell Cup wasn’t part of the original plan for Broadside but he came through last week’s race in such good order it was too good an opportunity to pass up.
“It was a tough run and he has bounced back without a fuss,” Bott said.
“He’d done plenty of work leading into Saturday’s race and is very fit.
“I think the quick back up will suit this horse. He’s at his peak.”
Tim Clark has the ride on Broadside while Josh Parr will be aboard Goldophin gelding, Allergic, who is the second favourite on TAB Fixed Odds at $3.40.
The Waterhouse/Bott stable has a second strong chance in Multitude.
“He passed that test with flying colours and now it’s time to see if we can get him to take the next step,” Bott said.
“It is a significant rise in class but I am sure both Multitude and Broadside will be competitive.”
