Bingara Hosts Final Leg Of Picone Summer Stars Series (Saturday)

By Mike Witherdin

Bingara hosts the last meeting in the series tomorrow for the Picone Summer Stars Bonus but the winners are already locked in.

A Deepwater Cup win following a second in the Glen Innes Cup and fourth in the Inverell Cup sees Carry Me Gee Gee wins the horse of the summer with 19 points.

The double points for Cup races meant Azzalin (13) and Safety Peg (12) missed the cash despite both winning twice on the summer circuit.

Carry Me Gee Gee was the joint winner of the award last year.

Total domination at Glen Innes meant Paddy Cunningham collects the trainer’s bonus with 63 points so far with Peter Sinclair second on 45 points. Both have runners at Bingara but Cunningham’s lead means he cannot be run down by Sinclair who has been Moree’s leading trainer for many years.

Last year the bonus went to Sue Grills with Cunningham a close second.

Jodi Worley (75) heads to Rosehill tomorrow to ride Image of Love in the Highway race for Paul Grills but with Darren Jones (62½) not riding at Bingara the results cannot change.

Jones was last year’s winner but could not reel in Worley who rode at all meetings in the series and has consistently been at the top of the leaderboard.

The Picone Summer Stars Bonus is organised by Inverell Jockey Club to give the smaller clubs in the northern part of the H&NW area an opportunity to promote interest in their meetings and hopefully increase participation at the meetings in the series.

Prizemoney is provided by the bookmaking brothers Terry, Phillip and Chris Picone whose family has been sponsoring racing and supporting the smaller clubs for many years.
