Bathurst Cup Legends Raceday Celebrates Region’s Strong Racing Tradition

Nominations are expected to be extremely strong for this year’s Bathurst Cup Legends Showcase Raceday on January 27 with prizemoney totalling $275,000 for the eight-race event.

Bathurst Thoroughbred Racing's General Manager, Michelle Tarpenning, said this signature event on the NSW country racing calendar has grown in strength every year since it was launched in 2011.

“This year is particularly exciting as it is a Showcase Meeting for Country Championships which means we have the biggest prizemoney ever on offer at the Tyers Park track,” she said. “We are also delighted to welcome two new sponsors and again express our appreciation for the ongoing support of the sponsors who have helped build the success of this important event.”

Nominations for the race that offers something for everyone, young and old, close at 11am on January 23.

A highlight of the 2017 Bathurst Cup will be special guest Jim Cassidy, one of Australasia’s greatest jockeys. This master horseman has a strong link with Bathurst as one of his most famous wins was in the 1997 Caulfield Cup riding Might and Power, 40 years after Tulloch’s celebrated win.

Regarded as one of Australia’s finest thoroughbred’s Tulloch was trained in the Bathurst region by the legendary Tommy Smith. Tulloch and Cassidy’s win on Might and Power are widely acclaimed to be two of the greatest wins in the race in the 20th Century with both achieving record times.

Tulloch is one of the legends celebrated at the Bathurst Cup Legends Raceday with the running of the Tulloch Cup Showcase Class 2 handicap over 1200 metres which is sponsored by the Haley Family. Bathurst’s classic race day has secured support from a wide range of sponsors extremely proud to be associated with Bathurst Thoroughbred Racing.

Ms Tarpenning said she is extremely pleased to welcome the Kings Hotel as the new sponsor for the feature race, the Bathurst Cup.

“I am also delighted that WaterMart is sponsoring the Ida Traille Showcase over 1300 metres, another race that celebrates a local identity who was instrumental in developing the Bathurst region’s strong racing tradition. The Bathurst Legends Day would not be successful without the generous support of our sponsors,” she said.

The Hugh Bowman Cup is sponsored by LJ Hooker Mosman, the Bill Aspros Cup by Lithgow Furniture and Bedding, “The Barb” by Edney Ryan and the Gold Circle Cup by Condon Family.

Make sure you don’t miss this great day of racing. Gates open at 11am, marquee packages are available and there will be a free sausage sizzle. For further information go to - btracing.com.au
