Baker Confident High Five's In Sight For Fresh Perfumist

By Ray Hickson

It’s been a quick rise from a Mudgee Class 1 win to eyeing four straight metropolitan wins at Randwick on Saturday and trainer Bjorn Baker has the fingers crossed that Perfumist can continue on her winning way.

Baker has his sights set on a slot in the new $3m The Kiwi back in New Zealand with Perfumist so there’s a bit riding on her performance in the Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1400m).

He’s given the filly a month since her all the way win at Rosehill and said from what he’s seen at home he has to believe, while she started her current campaign back in October, there’s more to give.

“I’m always mindful that she’s got to come to the end of it at some stage but she’s in great order,’’ Baker said.

“She’s continued to improve and even her work this week has been outstanding.

“I think it’s a good race for her, she gets in at the weights really well so with 3kg off she should be really hard to beat.”

Perfumist, $2 with TAB on Friday, drops 1kg on her last start win in mares company after Baker handed apprentice Anna Roper the ride.

Baker acknowledges the three-year-old has taken plenty of steps this preparation and says the fact she makes her own luck is a real asset.

“We’ve always had time for her so from that point of view it’s not the biggest surprise but she’s kept going the right way,’’ he said.

“She has tactical speed so she will be able to put herself there. She’s very tractable, she’s an exciting filly and continues to look great.”

The Warwick Farm trainer has been in dazzling form in the past couple of months and is closing on 50 winners for the season, having already surpassed last season’s total of 46 wins.

He holds the key to the outcome of the Group 3 $250,000 Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes (1200m) with noted front-runner Bonita Queen as well as the consistent Spring Lee.

Bonita Queen had her first attempt at 1200m three weeks ago at Randwick and was run down carrying 61.5kg so the big weight drop will help her cause.

“She drops 8.5kg, I think that’s the key, and she’s third-up so that’s a big positive for her,’’ Baker said.

“She looks to lead and we’ll let her do her thing, she may be vulnerable late but she will be up there for a long way.”

As for Spring Lee, he said that mare will appreciate a solid tempo which is something she didn’t get in her close third behind Grand Impact two weeks ago.

“She’s right down in the weights and I think she’s definitely a good chance,’’ he said.

“We’ll try to put her where she’s comfortable knowing that Bonita Queen will make sure there’s a decent speed on.”

Perfumist wins at Rosehill on January 18

Bjorn Baker on Iowna Merc (Race 5): “He’s gone up in the ratings so we’re having a crack, the one thing he’s got is fitness. He’s got a flexible racing pattern so he’s a horse we could maybe lead on if we want.”

On Disneck (Race 9): “The 1300m is a bit of a question mark for him, he’s drawn deep which doesn’t matter too much and we just hope they go quick enough so he can stay in touch. He gets in well at the weights with the claim. He’s got a great turn of foot and that’s what is going to hold him in good stead.”
