Gary Harley's Late Mail (Wyong, Thursday)

By Gary Harley

Sydney’s Jockey Premiership leader Brenton Avdulla has taken five mounts at Thursday's Wyong race meeting and all five are expected to be favourite in their respective races. He kicks off the day on the Kim Waugh-trained City Of Love in Race 1. The mare will appreciate the extra trip after a close second first-up recently.

In Race 2 the ‘Gun’ climbs aboard Chris Waller filly Miss Shanti and she only has to repeat a couple of her runs last prep to be hard to beat. The Godolphin filly Sanity is Avdulla’s ride in Race 3 and if she brings her trial form to Wyong she should win. Taniko (Race 4) and Montrachet (Race 8) round off the day for the 2018 Golden Slipper-winning jockey and both look ‘good things’ on their last start performances.

RACE 1 (WYONG RACE AGAIN MAY 3 MAIDEN PLATE, 1350M): City Of Love is the one to beat here after a close first-up second on this track on April 4. She will race on the pace from the good barrier and the longer trip this time is ideal. Avdulla sticks with her and she may be the best bet all day. Spin Bowles was narrowly beaten at Hawkesbury last start and is a threat. Cormac resumes after two placings from three starts last prep.
SELECTIONS: 5 CITY OF LOVE, 1 SPIN BOWLES, 2 CORMAC

RACE 2 (EARLY BIRD MEMBERSHIP MAIDEN, 1600M): Dashing Special has been placed in all three starts this prep and he should run well in this race. He normally races back in the field and runs on strong. Miss Shanti was beaten less than a length by Savacool in a Newcastle Maiden in November and in the same month was placed in a strong Wyong Maiden. Royal Anthem finished strong when a close third on this track two weeks ago.
SELECTIONS: 6 DASHING SPECIAL, 2 MISS SHANTI, 4 ROYAL ANTHEM

RACE 3 (CLUBS CHALLENGE RACEDAY MAY 22 MAIDEN, 1000M): Lexiloo chased home a smart one when second on this track two weeks ago. She drops in class here and should be prominent from this barrier. Fudgewedge was narrowly beaten in his only start on this track in December and he trialled okay recently. Sanity failed in her only start at Gosford in November but expect a big improvement after a recent trial win.
SELECTIONS: 5 LEXILOO, 4 FUDGEWEDGE, 9 SANITY

RACE 4 (MEN OF FOOTBALL CENTRAL COAST MAIDEN, 1200M): Taniko had good trial form before a debut second at Gosford on March 29. The filly was well backed and she chased the impressive winner all the way. She will race on the speed from this barrier. Stablemate Deft is on debut after a number of trials one of which she won at Rosehill in December. Cortesta has run on strong for two recent Hawkesbury placings.
SELECTIONS: 2 TANIKO, 3 DEFT, 7 CORTESTA

RACE 5 (PHOENIX FIRE PROTECTION CLASS 4, 1600M): Raise The Limit was an easy winner at Hawkesbury on March 27 and she was placed in her only Wyong start. The mare led all the way at Hawkesbury and she hasn’t been far away in much stronger metropolitan races in the past. Love None has been racing well in good fields in the country and cannot be underestimated. Good Host is another with solid country form.
SELECTIONS: 3 RAISE THE LIMIT, 2 LOVE NONE, 1 GOOD HOST

RACE 6 (CSR BRADFORD BENCHMARK 63, 2100M): Celebris showed a glimpse of his best form when a close second over the Gosford 1600 metres on March 29. He is a winner over 2200 metres at Newcastle and expect him to race on speed over this trip. Word Games is fitter for two runs from a spell and she chased home Delfuego and Celebris last start. Just Keep Giving races well on this track and has the rails barrier and Cory Brown.
SELECTIONS: 2 CELEBRIS, 4 WORD GAMES, 3 JUST KEEP GIVING

RACE 7 (MEN OF FOOTBALL CENTRAL COAST CHAPTER BENCHMARK 62, 1350M): Heat Haze is a lightly-raced filly with a Newcastle win and placing last prep. She trialled nicely recently at Wyong and she is well placed with the claim. Social Pirate steps up in class after three recent country placings and he has a chance. Stradance races okay on the home track.
SELECTIONS: 2 HEAT HAZE, 3 SOCIAL PIRATE, 4 STRADANCE

RACE 8 (CHRISTMAS IN JULY SATURDAY 14TH – CLASS 1, 1200M): Montrachet was an easy Rosehill winner last start on April 2. She was runner-up at Gosford in her only other start. The filly has genuine speed and is well placed. Artemis Rose is racing well and she will be strong late. Siam hasn’t raced since an easy Wyong win in October and he has the benefit of two recent trials.
SELECTIONS: 3 MONTRACHET 2 ARTEMIS ROSE 1 SIAM
