The Racing Appeals Tribunal hears and determines appeals from persons aggrieved by a decision of a controlling body, an approved racing organisation, or other person conducting a race meeting in the ACT in line with provisions contained in the Racing Act 1999 (the Act).
The functions of the Tribunal are contained in s39 of the Act. The decisions that can be appealed are:
The Racing Appeals Tribunal is established by the Act. It hears appeals from certain decisions of the Canberra Racing Club, the Harness Racing Club & persons conducting a race meeting.
The Tribunal is constituted only when an appeal is received & may utilise the services of an Assessor for a hearing, appointed in accordance with Schedule 2 of the Act. The Tribunal has received an average of one to two appeals annually over the past five years.
Job description
Section 42 of the Act provides that the Racing Appeals Tribunal may be assisted by one or more Assessors whose function is to assist and advise the Tribunal on any matter before it. Assessors are appointed on the basis that they have special knowledge of or experience in the racing industry.
Assessors are appointed for terms not exceeding three years.
Appointment of up to two Assessors will be considered during this expression of interest process.
