Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of Mr Barry Charman, a Life Member of Tweed River Jockey Club in Murwillumbah.
Barry, 75, was a former jockey and trainer in the Northern Rivers and had plenty of success at his beloved Murwillumbah Racecourse.
He was also a dedicated staff member of Tweed River Jockey Club's team for over 30 years having been part of the Club's everyday workings.
Barry was a tireless contributor to racing as a jockey, trainer, committeeman, curator, trackwork supervisor and jockey room attendant and was without peer.
In 2022, TRJC announced the inaugural Barry Charman Medal to be contested during the Tweed Coast Summer Racing Series in December of that year for the best jockey across the four days of the series.
At the time the Club said: “Tweed River Jockey Club believes this is a fitting way to ensure Barry’s legacy is not forgotten and recognise the many decades of service he has provided to TRJC.”
TRJC Director, Glenn Weaver said: "You wish in all facets of life you will cross paths with a guy like Barry. Very humble, hard-working and would give his time to anyone - just a great guy!
"Our thoughts go out to Barry's wife Mary, son Brian [Racing NSW's GM-Welfare & Operations] and family at this difficult time."
