Neil Evans' Tips For Taree (Friday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail true so likely to play even for Krambach Cup and Sprint day

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Competitive maiden to get us up and running. There's a sense of timing about improving Newcastle 3YO 4. One Star Shining who can peak fourth-up. Stuck on nicely at home getting to this trip for the first time, and should land a nice trail just off the speed.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by Scone 3YO 9. Intercept who did his best work late resuming over a much shorter journey. Will relish this trip, with blinkers off and senior rider going on. Local 3YO 1. Luminoso has been close up all three runs this prep. Suited coming back a little in trip after being rolled as an odds favourite at Port last start. The rest will go around at a big price, although Wyong 4YO 13. The Okay Corral is over the odds after being well specked in the market working home okay first-up at Tamworth.

How to play it: One Star Shining to win and trifecta 4,9/1,4,9,13/1,4,9,13. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 CLASS 2 PLATE - COUNTRY ONLY (1250m):

Granted, smart Coffs Harbour 4YO 3. Pace Stick is a deserved clear favourite and the one to beat, but he looks rock bottom price out to this trip. That said, he draws ideally, with a handy claim, and if he runs up to his close-up Highway effort two back, the rest will be fighting for the minor prizes.

Dangers: Improving Kempsey mare 5. Bear The Crown is looking for this distance third-up after a dominant win fresh at home, and then finishing off okay at Grafton. Another Coffs 4YO 4. Venusian is hard fit, and never raced better. Bolted in a CL1 at Grafton before sweeping home late in a BM 58 at Lismore, although this is a little tougher.

How to play it: quinella 3 and 5; and exacta 3/4,5

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Keen on Wyong-based Dream Ahead filly and first starter 8. Black Jacamar who travelled well in a recent trial, and is drawn to get the right run.

Dangers: Improving Newcastle 4YO 1. From The Hip finished off okay resuming at home. That was only his second run in a year, and was competitive second-up last prep. Watch the betting on Gosford mare 2. Classic Gown who hasn't started for 11 months, but looked forward enough in a recent trial, and trainer has rung the gear changes.

How to play it: Black Jacamar to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 KRAMBACH CUP (1600m):

Feature race over the mile looms as a huge battle of tactics. Keen at the value on Port 5YO 3. Chamisal who missed out narrowly working home from a wide gate in the BM 88 Hastings at home. Hard fit, and should land an ideal trail just off the speed.

Dangers: Wyong 5YO and ex-Kiwi 4. Ocean Go is ready to win again after four runs this prep, and dropping 4.5kg from a solid closing effort in metro BM 72 grade. Has bumped into smart city-class gallopers along the way, and this looks an ideal journey. Newcastle 5YO 8. Discombe will be keen to arrest the lead from the inside draw, and down sharply in weight. Dropped out after facing the breeze in a strong provincial BM 64 last start, but at only previous start here led all the way under 60kg in a CL2. Include home track 6YO 5. Editors who flew home to win first-up at Kempsey before again hitting the line hard in a BM 87 at Lismore.

How to play it: Chamisal to win and box trifecta 3,4,5,8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 BM 58 HCP (1000m):

Plenty of chances in this sprint. Coffs Harbour 4YO 5. Moonhawk has been up for a while, but gets his chance to win again. Has beaten all bar the winner is his last two, and will roll forward from a nice barrier carrying only 55.5kg after the claim.

Dangers: After being withdrawn from a few races, 3YO Newcastle filly 10. Foxy Xenia made a winning debut at Port, showing good tactical speed at both ends. Scone 6YO 4. Eleazar hasn't won for a while, but his last few runs have been among his best, including a fast-finishing effort at home in a CL2. Home track mare 11. Peachies Dream is best of the rest, but needs plenty of speed on up front to get home.

How to play it: Moonhawk to win and box exacta 4,5,10. Odds and Evens: Split

Moonhawk runs second at Armidale on September 20

Race 6 KRAMBACH SPRINT (1250m):

Strong edition of the feature sprint. Got plenty of time for lightly-raced Gosford 5YO 4. Classic Gaming coming back to his best distance fourth-up. Had to tire after working hard over further in a strong BM 68 at Newcastle, but his previous two runs were full of merit.

Dangers: Tough Newcastle 7YO 2. All From Scrap took a long time to regain winning form, but last start BM 84 win at Tamworth over Kosciuszko runner Ligulate is a good pointer for this. Draws to get a handy trail, but up sharply to 60.5kg. Cessnock 5YO 3. Asudem has plenty of ability, and only just missed in open grade second-up at Hawkesbury, although the winner was very ordinary next start.

How to play it: Classic Gaming to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 CLASS 3 HCP (1600m):

Consistent Gosford 5YO 3. New Tycoon is a proven weight carrier, and looks very hard to beat from the draw. Shooting for his third win in four starts after claiming a BM 64 at Wyong over this trip, and the second horse was then beaten a whisker in the Coonamble Cup.

Dangers: Newcastle mare 4. Meyer has shown steady improvement in two runs back, and can peak out to this trip and down a little in weight. Capable 4YO local mare 8. Oh So Hot has continually attacked the line this prep, sweeping home to win a thinner race at Lismore, and extra distance is only a plus. Keep safe Newcastle mare 7. Star Alibi who did her best work late resuming in a handy CL2. Second-up form is solid, although she may need one more run this time in stepping quickly to the mile.

How to play it: New Tycoon to win. Odds and Evens: Split

New Tycoon wins at Wyong on October 1

Race 8 MAIDEN PLATE (1250m):

Another competitive sprint at set weights to finish. Like Port 4YO 6. Wandzel resuming off a lengthy break over an ideal distance. Hasn't publicly trialled, but in good hands, and charged home on debut here in a deeper maiden.

Dangers: Well-bred Newcastle 3YO 11. Zodiacus debuts in winkers off a string of trials, winning the most recent in smart enough fashion, and the Kermadec stock are starting to have their say. Another first-starter, 3YO filly 13. Just Like Lisa has trialled okay, and draws well; while monitor the market on 5YO 5. Shen Gui who debuts as a gelding for new Cessnock stable after being off the scene for nearly two years, and has had two trials.

How to play it: Wandzel to win and quinella 6 and 11. Odds and Evens: Split
