Neil Evans' Tips For Tamworth (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Heavy 8/9 & rail true so on or just off the speed for much of the meeting before a late trend wider

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1000m):

We start with a very competitive sprint. Improving 2YO Newcastle filly 11. Muscadelle was a little disappointing first-up at home when hard in the market, but the winner is smart, and she can improve enough here to win.

Dangers: Scone 4YO mare 3. Potts Point showed good improvement at her second start, and is bred to handle the conditions.

How to play it: Muscadelle to Win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Still with the maidens, and progressive 3YO Newcastle filly 5. Jaja Chaboogie is the one to beat at only her second start from a handy draw. Finished nicely into a place behind a smart one on debut at Scone, and extra trip is ideal.

Dangers: Improving 3YO Armidale filly 9. Vinaigrette has been hitting the line hard all prep, and had very little luck getting home well at Dubbo last start. The inside draw doesn't do her style any favours, but is hard fit and will be finishing on. Big watch on 2YO Scone gelding and first starter 10. Dawn Strike (Dawn Approach x Pretty Strike by Spinning World) who has spent plenty of time at the trials, and debuts for a strong stable in blinkers.

How to play it: Jaja Chaboogie to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 3 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2100m):

Good battle of tactics. Keen on lightly raced 6YO Scone mare 10. Avalene second-up out to thIs trip after working home nicely resuming over the mile at home.

Dangers: Improving 3YO Newcastle filly 9. Hyperlink surged home to win her maiden third-up in the heavy at Port Macquarie. Steps up sharply in trip, but looks well in at the weights with blinkers on for the first time. Gulgong 4YO gelding 3. Clever Missile has been consistent enough without winning as the distances have risen. Draws to get a cosy run, and chances increased back on a smaller track; while 4YO Armidale gelding 7. Golden Boy has been working home okay under bigger weights this prep, and will relish getting out to this distance.

How to play it: Avalene to win and quinella 9 & 10. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

Two runners can fight this one out. Improving 3YO Scone filly 5. Entreat can snap a run of three straight 2nd placings, and break through at sixth start. Hit the line in successive runs at Dubbo before working home from just off the speed in a deeper maiden at home. Hard fit, and stable has again tinkered with the gear.

Dangers: Home track 4YO mare 7. Golden Missile is the clear threat at third start after chasing home two smart ones at Scone, although that winner then failed badly as a raging hot favourite next start; while 2YO Scone gelding 13. Overseas can improve at second start in a race with less depth.

How to play it: Entreat to win and quinella 5 and 7. Odds and Evens: Odds

Entreat runs second at Scone on June 26

Race 5 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Good quality race for this grade. Keen on progressive 3YO Scone filly 9. Stellar Blaze fourth-up for in-form stable. Charged home to win her maiden as a heavily backed favourite at Dubbo two runs back before close-up in a handy CL1 at home when she looked the winner at the furlong.

Dangers: Muswellbrook 3YO filly 5. Cecilia can take the next step after a tough front-running maiden win at Scone, and the second horse has since franked that form storming home to win his maiden at Grafton last week. Scone 4YO mare 3. A Room Somewhere is bursting to win a second race after three starts back from a long spell. Fought on strong here two runs back in a BM 58 before swamped late after leading early at Dubbo. Trainer has made key gear changes, and draws to get a controlled run from the inside barrier.

How to play it: Stellar Blaze to win & quinella 5 and 9. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 6 BM 58 HCP (1600m):

Talented 4YO Newcastle mare 4. The Deel Is Dun only got going late after getting a mile back this grade at Scone last start. Has good closing form in deeper races, and looks over the odds here with new jockey aboard.

Dangers: Consistent 3YO Newcastle gelding 3. The Borough is shooting for three straight after sweeping home to win a CL1 at Scone over the mile, but has paid the handicapper's price jumping to 61kg, and likely will be forced a long way back from the wide draw. Rival Newcastle 3YO gelding 1. Excelsa is also chasing a hat-trick after sailing home to win a weaker race at Quirindi. Up to 62kg here, but showing plenty of promise, and extra trip is no concern.

How to play it: The Deel Is Dun each way & box exacta 1,3,4. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 CLASS 2 HCP (1400m):

We finish with a good CL2, and Newcastle 3YO gelding 6. War Cat looks one of the better bets on the card after an impressive CL1 win at Muswellbrook. Beat Stellar Blaze who goes around earlier, and he's ready for the step up to this distance.

Dangers: Keep safe improving 3YO Moree gelding 5. Liberty Head who has been ultra consistent this prep. Finished hard to win at home last start, although much more depth in this field.

How to play it: War Cat to Win. Odds and Evens: Split.

War Cat wins at Muswellbrook on July 3
