Neil Evans' Tips For Tamworth (Friday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 3m from 950m - 275m, then out 2m the remainder, so on pace early before gradual trend towards the middle.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Muswellbrook 3YO gelding 9. Chargement resumes as a gelding with blinkers going on for just his third career start. Was held together nicely when others were pushed out in a competitive trial, and form rider goes on.

Dangers: Watch the market closely with resuming 3YO colt 8. Captain Solo from top Newcastle stable. Second attempt here for connections after he failed badly on debut at Scone in January, yet didn't really stretch out in a recent trial so may need the run. Expect sharp improvement second-up from local 3YO filly 13. Crimson Rose.

How to play it: Chargement to win. Odds and Evens (First 2): Split

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Potentially a very good maiden. Promising local 3YO gelding 8. Boomalong showed plenty of ability at Scone at only second career start threading his way through the field and charging away before only knocking up in the last few strides. Fitter now, he looks ready to break through.

Dangers: Impressed with the two trials of nicely bred 3YO Newcastle filly 12. Enchanted Heart (Shamus Award x Shattered Heart by Show A Heart) who draws well for debut, and looks ready to rock for leading stable. Lightly raced local 4YO gelding 1. Derby Star hit the line hard resuming, and looks stronger this time in. Debutant 4YO Muswellbrook gelding 3. Go Gaz (Myboycharlie x Rihanna by Rock Of Gibraltar) has had two forward trials, and looks ready to go; while 6YO Newcastle gelding 4. Little Geoffrey has been placed nine times from 16 starts, and like the last start fast-finishing effort at Scone, seems to save his best for when ridden well off the speed, and also comes out of solid form races.

How to play it: Boomalong each way and box exacta 1,8,12. Odds and evens: Evens

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Talented 4YO local back-marker 1. Hotel Charlie is screaming to break through after rattling home to just miss third-up, and should be at peak now in first prep.

Dangers: Promising 4YO Newcastle mare 4. Fashion Icon has been hitting the line hard all prep without winning, and was scratched from Scone on Tuesday to be saved for this. Likely to be forced back from a wide gate, but well capable of finishing over the top. Rival local 4YO mare 2. Amazing Day is tackling a stronger maiden here after finishing close-up in her last two, and draws to get a cosy run right behind the speed. Another Newcastle visitor, 3YO filly 7. Gloraya has also done her best work late in last two, but up sharply in weight; while well-named 3YO Scone gelding 3. Shame Warned has gone to the front in both starts so far and held on okay, so back in trip around this course is a little tactical advantage.

How to play it: Hotel Charlie to win and trifecta 1,4/1,2,3,4,7. Odds and Evens: Split

Hotel Charlie runs third at Tamworth on July 28

Race 4 BM 74 HCP (1400m):

Tricky race. Expecting big improvement from 7YO Newcastle gelding 7. Dead Calm who was never likely resuming in a good Class 3 at Scone, but that was his first run in 18 months, and gets nice weight relief here.

Dangers: After four straight wins, the bubble burst on 5YO Newcastle gelding 4. The Outcast at Wyong last start, but he draws to take up a nice trailing position stalking the speed. Gunnedah 6YO gelding 5. Beale Street has progressed well enough this prep, and from the inside draw should be somewhere in the finish. Local 10YO gelding 3. Hammoon Boy has been a good money spinner for connections, and has been going around in stronger graded races, but long time out of the winner's stall; while Mudgee gelding 1. Cloak resumes off a nice trial win; but doubt he can get the better of these under 61.5kg.

How to play it: Dead Calm each way. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 BM 66 HCP (2100m):

Tough race to assess for the stayers, although 5YO Scone mare 6. Athena's Voice is on an upward spiral despite taking on tougher opposition. Had to make a sustained run from a fair way out last start, but still won comfortably with something in hand.

Dangers: Newcastle 7YO gelding 3. Chosen Prince doesn't have a flash strike rate, but has chased home some good horses this prep, including Decroux last start who has since won again at Canterbury. Gosford 6YO gelding 2. Albert Of Monaco is hard fit after six runs back, and finished strongly in a solid form race at Hawkesbury, but handicapper has savaged him again with 61kg. Honest Tamworth mare 5. Cut The Mustard surged home to win a weaker race this track last start in what was her best run in a long time, and ready for the step back up in grade; while capable 6YO Newcastle mare 8. So You Merge improved into her last run this grade at Taree, but from a wide barrier will have to find at least another length to win this.

How to play it: Athena's Voice to win and trifecta 3,6/2,3,5,6,8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 CL2 HCP (1600m):

Not much between these, although sticking firmly with lightly raced 4YO Scone mare 7. Zealot who won her maiden at double figure odds on debut three runs back, before powering home from a mile back at even bigger odds this track last start. Banking a little bit on potential, but the mile with just 54.5kg looks ideal.

Dangers: Gulgong 4YO gelding 1. Larynx looks capable of controlling this after drawing the inside, and has been around the money in his last few. Local 5YO mare 8. Mystic Splendour is another who has been threatening to win all prep while generally hard in the market, and while he also came up with a wide gate, is probably the best weighted runner, with leading rider getting on. Local gelding and last start winner 2. Capitulate scrambled home at Coonabarabran in a weak BM 58, so would need all the breaks from a wide barrier; while 4YO Scone mare 3. True Finesse looks well treated at the weights off her last two efforts in BM 58 grade, but also has to overcome a tricky draw.

How to play it: Zealot to win and quinella 1 and 7. Odds and evens: Odds

Race 7 BM 58 HCP (1200m):

Tough one to dissect with plenty of chances. Local 6YO mare 11. Onya Rosie has more ability than her record suggests. Has worked home strongly from well off the speed in her last three, and second horse from her last run this track has since scored a dominant win at Scone.

Dangers: Another Scone visitor, 4YO mare 6. Mapili has found the going a bit tougher since winning her maiden four runs back, although backs up quickly from chasing home the smart Iconic Star at Muswellbrook last Sunday. Local 5YO mare 9. Fussdinado resumed from nearly a year off with a good closing effort this track, but up 2.5kg might be a stretch in this field. Local mare 8. Balantes broke a long run of outs finishing hard to win at Coonabarabran, and draws to get a nice run, although more depth here; while rival Scone-based 2. Lope De Mango who put in a rare poor run last start will both need luck from a wide barrier.

How to play it: Onya Rosie each way and box first four 2,6,8,9,11. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 CL2 HCP (1000m):

Promising 3YO Scone filly 9. Bellarina Magic looks one of the better weighted bets of the meeting despite only being just out of maiden grade. Swept home for an impressive breakthrough win this track at fourth start, and with plenty of speed on up front, maps to do the same again.

Dangers: Newcastle 4YO mare and natural speedster 2. Miss Powerbelle is a clear threat, with multiple gear changes, despite rising sharply in weight. Just caught in the last few strides at Gosford two runs back before couldn't sustain the pressure in a stronger sprint at Wyong when heavily backed. This is easier, and draws to get a gun run. Improving local 4YO gelding 1. Screen Shot progressed from a good Class 2 to land the cash at Moree last start, and rider's 4kg claim gets him well into the race again. Wyong mare 7. Cunningar Lass was ridden more forward second-up at Dubbo and fought on strongly to run a place. Wears blinkers for the first time.

How to play it: Bellarina Magic to win and quinella 2 and 9. Odds and Evens: Split
