Neil Evans' Tips For Scone (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail true so should play fairly even.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

Tricky race to start. Wyong gelding 3. Direct Vision was heavily-backed on debut at Scone, but didn't look overly comfortable in the run and disappointed. Improves over the longer trip with that experience and always shown plenty of ability at the trials.

Dangers: Expect nice improvement second-up from Newcastle 3YO gelding 5. Kalahari after working home late at Port Macquarie; while Wyong gelding 4. Got The Dosh (Moshe x Doska by Caerleon) has also trialled well ahead of debut, and in same stable as Direct Vision. Watch the market on debutant filly 11. Autumn Rain who is bred to get over ground, is a stablemate of Kalahari, and had two quiet trials.

How to play it: Direct Vision to win and trifecta 3/4-5-11.

Race 2 BM 66 HCP (1700m):

Newcastle filly 8. Hammoon Ballad looks ready to win. Finished nicely in a good CL2 two back before strong late behind McCormack in very heavy ground at Kembla. Weights and draw in her favour for leading trainer/rider combination.

Dangers: Newcastle 4YO gelding 3. Nothing Too Hard is also on the cusp after finishing hard under the same weight in a deeper BM 66 last start. Hawkesbury 5YO 2. Base Camp comes back from the Bathurst Cup, and while up sharply in weight, this is more to his liking; while 4YO gelding 5. Chuck'N'Paul has won two of his last four, and looks suited around this course. Locally-trained mare 6. Daiquiri Lass won two runs back, and was solid through the line in the Tiara at Muswellbrook, and should be in the finish with a claim and inside draw. Muswellbrook 4YO 1. Yuralla Boy snuck under punters' guards last start scoring an upset win at home off a break in the heavy, but won't get the wet track advantage here.

How to play it: Hammoon Ballad to win and first four 8/1-2-3-5-6.

Hammoon Ballad runs second at Kembla Grange on March 23

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1000m):

Open sprint, but keen on Scone mare 3. Moscow Mistress who has been close-up in all three runs this prep, and can overcome a wide barrier.

Dangers: Newcastle 3YO 2. Little Archie has steamed home in both runs this prep, and should be suited on the big sweeping run home here, but needs speed on up front; while market watch on returning Newcastle filly 11. Airlie Avenue who didn't do a lot in her first prep, but trialled okay at Wyong last month.

How to play it: Moscow Mistress to win.

Race 4 CL1 HCP (1600m):

Local 3YO filly 3. Duchess Of Lennox was unwanted in betting, but powered home second-up to knock off heavily-backed Tombolo who then franked the form winning at Tamworth on Friday. Must be in the finish if she backs up, and is bred to run a strong mile.

Dangers: Wyong gelding 1. Hubble was over-run on the heavy at Muswellbrook last start, but improves third-up from a better draw and back on top of the ground. Newcastle filly 4. Tessa Burrito is a big finisher who deservedly won her maiden last start, and will appreciate this track; while local mare 6. Final Crown has her foot on the till after three solid runs this prep.

How to play it: Duchess Of Lennox to win and quinella 1 and 3.

Race 5 F & M BM 58 HCP (1300m):

Good race. Loved the way locally-trained 3YO 4. In Good Health savaged the line last start at Muswellbrook after drawing wide. Up in weight, but draws better to get plenty of cover off the speed, and again launch late on a track that suits her pattern.

Dangers: Scone mare 5. Rosesay mixes form, but has plenty of ability. Her maiden win four runs back was a beauty, and she's just missed in two of three runs since over similar trips. Carries her biggest weight, but will be sweeping home. Another local filly 9. Aubrey Skies has been hard in the market all three runs this prep, charging home to win her maiden two back before closing hard again this grade at Armidale. Keep a close watch on emerging Newcastle 3YO 8. The Deel Is Dun first-up. Charged home from a mile back to win her maiden at Taree at third career run before being spelled.

How to play it: In Good Health to win.

Race 6 C, G & E BM 58 HCP (1300m):

Plenty of chances headed by Muswellbrook gelding 8. Timion who is ready for this distance now after two smart runs over much shorter in strong CL1 company.

Dangers: Wyong 3YO gelding 3. Cliff's Choice is only just out of maiden grade, but habitually takes up a forward position and rider claims 2kg. Gosford 4YO 4. Kristensen disappointed when well backed at Tamworth after easily winning his maiden two runs ago, but will drift a fair way back from a wide barrier. Mudgee 5YO 9. Redirect looks suited back a little in trip after being easily run down this track in a good CL2. Previous form in weaker company was solid, and hails from a strong yard; while Tamworth 7YO 6. St Luke is inconsistent, but gets a nice trailing draw and has a good strike-rate this track.

How to play it: Timion each way.

Race 7 CL1 HCP (1100m):

Wyong filly 1. Buckin' Beauty was scratched from Wellington on Sunday to be saved for this, and looks well placed after 3kg claim. Resumed with a solid run in CL2 grade at Hawkesbury, and only previous win came second-up. Way over the odds!

Dangers: Local filly 6. Fille Volante resumes for a second campaign, and finished hard to win on debut at Newcastle in the spring; while 3YO Gosford gelding 2. Rhythmic Pulse bolted in at Port Macquarie first-up, but this is tougher and draws wide. The form of Newcastle 4YO 9. The Outcast doesn't look flash, but he's finished strong from well back in two runs this prep at Coffs Harbour, and gets in well at the weights.

How to play it: Buckin' Beauty each way.
