Neil Evans' Tips For Orange (Friday)

By Neil Evans

Showcase meeting on Good 4, with the rail True, so should play fairly even, with slight leaning to the outside.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1280m):

Tough and even opener at set weights, although Warwick Farm 3YO visitor 3. Big Bad Bruce just needs an even share of luck from the wide gate to be charging into the finish. Has had four runs back and hit the line hard at Canberra last start.

Dangers: Mudgee 3YO filly 13. Fiery Zone continues to improve, and has good tactical speed early. Gulgong-trained 2. Morotai generally peaks second-up with the blinkers off, and should be in the finish from the inside draw; while another Warwick Farm 3YO 6. Sparks improved into the placings at Hawkesbury, and gets a nice run from the gate here third-up.

How to play it: Big Bad Bruce to win and box trifecta 2-3-6-13.

Race 2 BM 66 HCP (1600m):

After consecutive wins at Bathurst and Newcastle, Warwick Farm gelding 3. Soldier Of Love just faltered late under pressure in heavy ground at Wyong, but can re-bound here back on top of the ground, and drawn to get ideal cover. The one to beat!

Dangers: Gulgong mare 2. Sea Lady mixes her form, but last run in the Tiara at Muswellbrook from well off the speed was strong under a big weight. Will obviously sit closer in this smaller field, and rider's 3kg claim is pivotal. Honest Mudgee gelding 1. Kingsbridge is back in trip and class, but weighted to his absolute best; while Hawkesbury 3YO 5. Purton won his maiden this track two runs back, and is continuing to improve.

How to play it: Soldier Of Love to win and trifecta 3/1-2-5.

Race 3 BM 58 HCP (1300m):

No prizes for any good strike rate in this, but expecting massive improvement second-up from Warwick Farm mare 3. Zabeel's Choice after failing in the heavy resuming at Nowra. Competed in much deeper races late last year, and good barrier off-sets big weight.

Dangers: Gulgong 4YO 5. Dart Street is looking for this trip after sweeping home from the back first-up at Warren; while another Gulgong-trained runner 8. Rawson Crossing struggles to win but got home nicely behind smart galloper Super Cyclone at Wellington and gets a big pull in the weights. Mudgee 7YO 1. Dubali is first-up for strong stable, and while his fresh form is ordinary, won only previous start this track.

How to play it: Zabeel's Choice to win.

Race 4 MAIDEN HCP (1000m):

Open affair, with a few chances. Hawkesbury mare 8. Silly Sally resumed off a long break with an even run in heavy ground, and was scratched from Hawkesbury on Tuesday to be saved for this.

Dangers: Warwick Farm-trained filly and first starter 10. Glamarama (Zoustar x Nella Dane by Danehill) looked good at the trials, and draws a nice gate for strong trainer/rider combination. Big watch on debutant Bathurst gelding 1. Al Kaphero (Kaphero x That's No Apt by Foreplay) who won a trial in smart fashion this track, and stable is flying with youngsters.

How to play it: Silly Sally to win and quinella 8 and 10.

Race 5 2YO HCP (1000m):

Intriguing race dominated by some well bred first starters. One of those Rosehill colt 4. Rubic Honour (Rubick x Charm's Honour by Strada) debuts for leading juvenile stable off two smart trials, the latest an impressive close second under a hold. Bred to fly!

Dangers: Debutant Wyong gelding 1. Contalmaison (Rubick x la Boisselle by Danehill) has shown speed in two forward trials, and while draws wide, stable is renowned for its timing. Keep watch too on debutant Hawkesbury filly 9. Jokes (Deep Field x Cut Up by Lonhro) who trialled nicely.

How to play it: Rubic Honour to win & exacta 4/1-9.

Race 6 CUP DAY SPRINT (1000m):

Competitive burn here. Like emerging Warwick Farm 3YO filly 8. Showgals who was strong through the line resuming on the heavy at Kembla in what has been a good form race. Bolted in this track against weaker opposition in the spring, and right down in the weights after rider's claim.

Dangers: After three runs in stronger grade, Rosehill-trained 6YO 1. Latin Boy roared back into the winner's circle at big odds in the Skellatar at Muswellbrook, but saddled with a huge weight here. Lightly raced 6YO local mare 3. Absolute Ripper has been campaigning in the city, and scored an upset win three runs back at Warwick Farm, and drawn to be in the finish down in weight. Consistent Scone 8YO 2. Just A Bullet resumes off a fair open trial, and fresh form is okay; while Dubbo 7YO and last-start Narromine BM 77 winner 7. Any Blinkin' Day drops in weight and is best of the rest.

How to play it: Showgals each way and box trifecta 1-2-3-8.

Race 7 ORANGE GOLD CUP (2100m):

Feature race, and very keen on Cowra 6YO gelding 2. Welcome Art getting out to the right trip. Bolted in his home town cup from off the speed earlier in the year, and made up late ground behind Chocolatier in the Bathurst Cup. Peaks for this.

Dangers: Hawkesbury mare and topweight 1. Letter To Juliette is the class runner, and draws the inside. Was competitive in much tougher metro grade earlier in the year, and made up good ground in the Cup Prelude. Dubbo 7YO gelding 3. Cowboy's Karma is a consistent on-speed type who won the Cup Prelude comfortably after being well backed, and should be in the finish. Hawkesbury-trained 5YO and last start Wyong winner 5. Itasca is clear best of the rest.

How to play it: Welcome Art to win and box trifecta 1-2-3-5.

Race 8 CL1 HCP (1400m):

Not a lot of depth here. Warwick Farm 3YO gelding 2. Baeed has been a little disappointing after a first-up maiden win at Bathurst, but wasn't beaten far in a stronger BM 58 at Muswellbrook last start, and draws a good gate, with a lugging bit on for the first time.

Dangers: Hawkesbury 5YO 1. Winch gets his chance to repay punters after four straight placings this prep, the latest when flashing home late this track in a BM 58; while 6YO Dubbo mare 6. Our Lady Violet has been finding the line okay, and is best of the rest.

How to play it: Baeed to win.

Baeed runs at fifth at Muswellbrook on March 29
