Neil Evans' Tips For Narromine (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 4m from 900m to 300m, then True the remainder for wide open Diggers Cup day. Track likely to be on or near the speed early before a late trend wider

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Challenging start with the maidens at set weights. Improving 4YO mare 6. Poetic Harmony from the Dubbo stable of Clint Lundholm can break through third-up. Led for a long way resuming here, then hit the line hard ridden just off the speed at Coonabarabran. Draws okay, with top country rider going on.

Dangers: Watch the betting on rival Dubbo mare and first starter 7. Stella's Star (Excites x Friends Venture by Sequalo) who has trialled okay; while Mudgee filly 8. All Star Rocket was plain first-up, but can improve sharply back on firmer footing with blinkers going on.

How to play it: Poetic Harmony to win. Odds and Evens (First 2): Split

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Tough and open maiden, with plenty of chances. Mudgee 3YO gelding 3. Big Talk looks well placed third-up from the inside draw coming out of a stronger maiden at Scone when made some late ground.

Dangers: Dubbo mare 7. Sticks 'N' Stones went hard resuming at Coonabarabran, and knocked up late, but better suited second-up over more ground in firmer going. Scone 3YO filly 10. Magic Moet has been freshened, and can improve at fourth start getting back on top of the ground. Dubbo filly 9. Dissisoul comes out of that same Coonabarabran maiden when making late ground from well back, but would need to improve further; while home track 4YO 2. Defies Logic showed improvement at Coonabarabran off a freshen-up, and draws to get a more economical run.

How to play it: Big Talk each way and trifecta 3,7,10/2,3,7,9,10/2,3,7,9,10. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1300m):

Another even and wide contest. Improving 3YO gelding 3. Supergaze from the Dean Mirfin yard at Bathurst can break through at only second start over longer after a solid debut at Orange when backed in from a double figure price. Draws to get a nice run just behind the speed, and stable is renowned for getting their youngsters to improve quickly.

Dangers: Big watch on debutant 4YO Mudgee gelding 2. Will To Excel (High Chaparral x Essence Of Success by Encosta de Lago) who has trialled well, but drawn off the track; while 3YO Gulgong filly 12. Missile Rain, stablemate to Ginger's Voice, was slow to begin at Wyong, and can improve third-up dropping in class.

How to play it: Supergaze to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Supergaze runs fourth at Orange on April 17

Race 4 BM 58 HCP (1600m):

Competitive Heat of the Rising Star over a mile. Lightly raced 7YO 5. Western Parade from the Bathurst yard of Gayna Williams finished off nicely from well back first-up in stronger BM 58 at Orange, and second-up record is solid.

Dangers: Nyngan 5YO 7. Broo Boss won two straight in weaker company before no match for a dominant winner this grade at Wellington, but big plus getting back on top of the ground. Local 5YO gelding 6. Carnegie's Monaco has scored consecutive wins at Maiden and CL1 level, both times powering through from near midfield, but this is tougher and will needed everything go his way from the extreme outside draw.

How to play it: Western Parade each way. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 5 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

Lightly raced and talented 4YO gelding 5. Shamusu Sho from the Cody Morgan stable at Tamworth hasn't started for four weeks, but reportedly working well. Swept home despite covering ground for effortless second-up win at Armidale, and drawn to repeat the dose here.

Dangers: Dubbo 3YO filly 13. One Pound boxed on okay after leading in a stronger BM 58 at Orange, and while has a tough draw, leading country rider jumps aboard. Nyngan 6YO 1. Admit One has a tricky gate, but gets blinkers for the first time. Was strong to the line two runs back at Dubbo before flat under a huge weight at Forbes. Braidwood 5YO 3. One More Tipple did his best work late in a CL1 at Moruya when heavily specked from a big price, and will appreciate the extra journey.

How to play it: Shamusu Sho to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Shamushu Sho wins at Armidale on March 29

Race 6 BM 50 HCP (1300m):

Thinner but tough race, with several chances. Keen on consistent 4YO gelding 5. Gorn Hoff from the Dubbo stable of Clint Lundholm who rattled home first-up for eight months against deeper opposition two runs back, before again charging late to win this grade at Coonabarabran. Still on the rise, and just needs clear air from the turn.

Dangers: Lightly raced Gulgong 4YO 1. Clever Missile resumes from inside draw for only second prep off two quiet trials. Came to hand reasonably quickly last time in, and will be well fitted for return. Nyngan 6YO 3. Bee Double Bee has appreciated the drop back to this grade finishing well at Dubbo before thundering home to win at Coonabarabran. Climbs to 61kg now, and will need plenty of speed on to get over the top. Another Dubbo-based gelding 6. Satan Da returned in good order hitting the line strong this grade at home, and generally improves further into second-up run. Include rival lightly raced Dubbo filly 8. Eva's Deel who has shown nice progress in two CL1 runs this prep, and draws to find a good trail around midfield.

How to play it: Gorn Hoff to win and trifecta 1,3,5/1,3,5,6,8/1,3,5,6,8. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 7 BM 50 HCP (1300m):

Take two, same grade and distance, and this is very tricky as well. Scone 4YO gelding 1. Banff from the Rod Northam yard has good ability, but hasn't fired a shot in two runs back this prep. Draws a good barrier, and this is a decent drop in class getting back on to his preferred firm ground.

Dangers: Mudgee 6YO 11. Rawson Crossing has far more to offer than his poor winning strike rate from 50 starts. Hard fit, and has motored home into a place in his last couple. Orange 7YO mare 4. Fanny Chenal resumes off a near eight month spell without a public trial, and fresh record is poor, but hails from a smart stable and this is the weakest company she's tackled in a while.

How to play it: Banff to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 8 DIGGERS CUP (1300m):

Strong feature race of the day, with plenty of hopes. Smart 5YO mare 5. Jetgirl from the Mirfin yard at Bathurst didn't have a lot of luck in the Cup Day Sprint at Orange behind a good one, but still hit the line, and will appreciate the longer trip here. Drawn okay, and has a 25 per cent winning strike rate from 28 starts.

Dangers: Talented 4YO Dubbo gelding 4. Sneak Preview was terrific winning a Country C'ship Qualifier at Coonamble two runs back before finished well in the Country Final at Randwick from well off the speed. Never raced better, but will still need the early breaks from a horror draw. Tamworth 6YO 6. Whosyourhousemate fought hard under a big weight to win first-up at home before felt the effects in stronger Country C'ship Wildcard dropping out early in the straight. Has been freshened via a useful trial, and draws the inside. Iron-like Nyngan 7YO 1. A Magic Zariz has been in and around the state and the placings in his last few, but has a tough task under big weight from a wide draw. Well performed Mudgee 7YO 7. Distinctive Look has ability, and virtually all his success has come on good ratings. Drops sharply in weight from a nice trailing draw.

How to play it: Jetgirl each way and trifecta 4,5,6/1,4,5,6,7/1,4,5,6,7. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 9 CLASS 3 HCP (1100m):

Good competitive sprint to finish, and very keen on lightly raced 5YO mare 3. Northern Lights from the Brett Thompson stable at Gulgong fourth-up off some very consistent form. Rattled home to win a CL2 at Mudgee two back before digging deep to beat a good quality BM 66 field here. Draws to get the right trail just off the speed.

Dangers: Dubbo 6YO gelding 1. Good Time Charlie resumes off a smart trial, and despite the big weight, nearly always runs well fresh; while 6YO Scone gelding 6. Magnarock is best of the rest coming back from deeper races.

How to play it: Northern Lights to win. Odds and Evens: Odds.
