For accomplished international trainer Jeremy Gask, Mudgee on Sunday and six acceptors is a racing world away from Royal Ascot where he raced an international class galloper and saw Black Caviar win the 2012 Diamond Jubilee.
Gask originally trained in Adelaide and then a decade in England is in a productive period with a recent Muswellbrook winning double and has four acceptors in Sunday’s Kelly’s Irish Pub BM 58, 1400m with a capacity field and solid regional form.
“My best for the day is in Race 4, Who Ever Thought ($5 into $4.80 on TAB) who is race fit, in form and it's the right race,” offered Gask.
Dual winner Who Ever Thought, with the benefit of a 2kg claim off 61kg for Mitch Stapleford, scored at Scone in June on the pace.
He then contested the lead again when unplaced in a strong TAB Highway at Rosehill Gardens won by highly promising Intervarsity.
Lightly raced four-year-old mare Full Commitment ($151 into $101), a Quirindi maiden winner and in the money five of seven starts, has 57.5kg with Robbie Downey.
“From the rails draw, Whoever Thought will be on-pace, but drawn wide the mare will get back, a strong tempo will help us, but she’s racing really well.”
At this stage jockeys haven’t been declared for stablemates, Little Bit Flash ($26) and emergency Croatian Madame ($41), both drawn wide.
A similar situation with the Messara & Gavranich-trained Smokin’ Crazy ($7.50 from gate 14).
A big watch on the day is Scott Singleton's first starters Kimberley Moon ($2.20 fav) and Moovova ($15) in the Mudgee Soldier’s Club Country Boosted Country Maiden (1100m).
In particular Kimberley Moon has been impressive winning successive barrier trials at Tamworth and for Singleton is in super form.
Back to Gask who in 2007 moved with his family to train in England at Wiltshire for a decade and was a regular at hallowed Royal Ascot where he saw Black Caviar’s epic performance amidst adversity.
There Gask raced the truly remarkable Group-winning sprinter Medicean Man who from 2012 contested six successive King’s Stand events and incredibly won his 13th and final race as an 11-year-old in Dubai in 2017.
