Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Sunday’s Wagga meeting. Selections based on a soft track.
Race 1 - 12:20PM KOORINGAL STUD 2YO MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES) |
---|
1. Kerma Art appears to have the best trial form and if he runs up to the win here om April 12 he does look the horse to beat. Travelled well and looked professional and that takes him a long way.
Dangers: 5. Zipatlist ran second in that trial and also performed quite well. Could come down to who has more improvement from the hitout. 7. Discreet Affair has also had one trial and that was at Kembla a couple of week ago where she finished a close second. Well worth respecting. 2. Plenitude has race experience from the Wellington Boot where he made some ground from last to finish midfield. Better for that and could surprise.
How to play it: Kerma Art WIN ($2.50 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 2 - 12:55PM JOHN CLARK MAIDEN HANDICAP (1000 METRES) |
---|
2. Jordy Girl hasn’t raced since a close second at Wodonga back in November where she showed speed to lead. Moved nicely in a trial win here recently and should have every chance in this field.
Dangers: 1. Allaboutroy started favourite on debut here in January where he jumped with them but didn’t muster before charging into third. Blinkers on and he looks dangerous. 4. Two Aye is a half sister to handy mare One Aye and she trialled quite well behind the smart Distillate at her only public hitout. Likely improver on whatever she does here.. 3. Riva D’Amour trialled at Warwick Farm on April 14 and ran well behind a runaway winner. Open to improvement and any market moves would be significant.
How to play it: Jordy Girl WIN ($3.60 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 3 - 1:30PM FINANCE TYCOON MURRUMBIDGEE CUP (1800 METRES) |
---|
7. Offspring is the up and comer of the field and was super impressive winning at Canberra over a mile third-up. Rises in class but shapes as though the extra trip will suit and no surprise if she measures up.
Dangers: 2. Toretto is a backmarker racing well without winning. Placed in the South East Country Championships and comes here on the back of a nice third at Hawkesbury over 1600m. Well placed in this grade and a good chance. 1. Takissacod is back in class after a couple of 1400m runs at Warwick Farm. Might get some control up on the speed here and on her best can take running down. 3. Milamoo backs up after a solid second in the Gundagai Cup last week. Racing in career best form and is sure to be running on again.
How to play it: Offspring WIN ($3.60 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
Offspring wins at Canberra on April 7
Race 4 - 2:05PM BEDE MURRAY COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES) |
---|
3. Associate will start a short priced favourite and rightly so on his two starts in Sydney so far. Gallant on debut when narrowly beaten then favourite back in February and was a shade disappointing. Back in a country maiden can get the job done.
Dangers: 5. Side Cash hasn’t raced since January and has been unplaced in all three starts. However there was plenty to like about his trial behind Jordy Girl here recently and he could have turned the corner. Keep safe. 1. Akka’s Meteor ran a handy enough race first-up at Albury a month ago at 1000m when on the pace. Fitter for that and while he had a few chances for his previous trainers he can be in the finish of this. 9. Majestic Rossa held her ground okay first-up at Gundagai last week and might appreciate a bit firmer footing here. Each-way claims.
How to play it: Associate WIN ($1.35 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: ODDS.
Associate runs second at Kensington in December
Race 5 - 2:40PM THE BROTHERS WAR COUNTRY BOOSTED BM58 (1600 METRES) |
---|
12. Broadelle is working up to a win and found the line well late into second at Albury a month ago. Drawn nicely and stays down in the weights so has every chance to run the mile out. Go well.
Dangers: 7. Zariz No Water had some support at odds and ran right up to it with a closing second at Nowra a couple of weeks ago. That was his first run at a mile this prep and is a good chance here. 5. Belleistic Kids backs up after a solid second at Gundagai on a heavy 10 last week. Honest type who can put himself in the finish somewhere again. 11. Despoina jumped sharply in distance into her last run at Canberra so that can be overlooked. Handy winner prior at 1408m so the mile probably suits better. Can improve.
How to play it: Broadelle WIN ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
Broadelle runs second at Albury on March 23
Race 6 - 3:20PM PRIZED ICON GUINEAS PRELUDE 3YO BM 66 HANDICAP (1400 METRES) |
---|
5. Montebello’s Charm put the writing on the wall with his second-up run at Goulburn and backed it up with a dominant maiden win at Orange. Will relish the 1400m and no reason to think he can’t pick them up again.
Dangers: 6. Sebastian’s Flyer was a popular maiden winner at Nowra two weeks ago and really hasn’t put in a bad one lately. Excuses at his only attempt at 1400m and he’s one of the main chances. 4. Winning Point is also a last start maiden winner scoring at Kembla on April 4 in good style. Will be fitter for that and looks a big threat. 2. Smartawi was racing in top form before a failure at Newcastle two weeks ago. Find this a bit easier and while drawn wide he’s capable of showing up.
How to play it: Montebello’s Charm WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
Montebello’s Charm wins at Orange on April 14
Race 7 - 3:59PM MERCHANT NAVY AT KOORINGAL WAGGA TOWN PLATE PRELUDE (1200M) |
---|
6. Rocket Tiger ran a sound second in the Albury City Handicap then not disgraced behind Democracy Manifest at Randwick. Possibly not the horse he promised to be as a youngster but is racing well now and a good chance.
Dangers: 7. Akeed is an interesting runner having his first run for the Joseph Jones stable. Won the Moruya Town Plate in December and on his best is good enough. 4. Black Duke can be hard to catch at times but he broke through at Hawkesbury in March before failing there on a heavy track. Inclined to overlook that one and he can show up. 1. Magnetic is in excellent form and boxed on for third in the Flat Knacker last time out. Has won at this track and trip and must be considered.
How to play it: Rocket Tiger WIN ($4.00 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
Race 8 - 4:39PM SANDBAR QUEEN OF THE SOUTH PRELUDE BM58 HANDICAP (1300M) |
---|
3. Arts Object was outclassed at Group 3 level last time but impressed with two wins in this grade in February up to a mile. Freshened up and gets a nice soft run from an inside gate. Sure to take holding out.
Dangers: 2. Diamond Star appears the logical danger after a handy first-up win at Canberra two weeks ago where she was a firmer in betting. Can only be fitter and is in the mix. 10. Desi Girl doesn’t win out of turn but she’s racing consistently and gave a good sight at Gundagai leading and holding on for third at 1400m. May need it wetter but not the worst. 5. Smokin’ Cod was a popular winner at Albury a month ago then probably didn’t love the heavy at Gundagai last week. Give another chance back on the home track.
How to play it: Arts Object WIN ($2.40 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
