Racing NSW has been informed of the sudden passing of former Port Macquarie-based trainer, Ron Adkins, on Wednesday (6th June).
Ron, 89, is the father of Riders' Agent, Brett Adkins, and the grandfather of talented young jockey, Andrew.
"Dad has been in sound health so it came as a bit of a shock," Brett Adkins said this morning. "I took him to the Taree races last week and he was fine and had a couple of beers. He always enjoyed watching Andrew ride."
Mr Adkins's last runner was Miamiti who was runner-up at Port Macquarie on 10 January 1998. The mare had won at Taree three starts beforehand and he also won eight races with Nutmeg.
"His best horse was She's a Hoot who won three straight before running in the city," Brett said. "Dad was born in Sydney but moved to Victoria with his family during the Depression. He then came up to Port Macquarie where he took out a trainer's licence."
FUNERAL DETAILS: A funeral service for Mr Ron Adkins will commence at 2pm this Friday (15th June) at Innes Gardens, Phillip Charley Drive, Port Macquarie.
